POV DABI
"This is stupid," I mutter under my breath. The sound is muffled by Keigo's hand slapping over my mouth, his unnaturally sharp nails digging into the rough, burnt flesh along my jaw. I can smell the sweat and grime on his palm, and it's making me want to vomit.
But Keigo has that familiar glint of determination in his pretty golden eyes, so my protests fall on deaf ears. I'm like puddy in his grubby little hands.
"Shush," Keigo fires back.
He doesn't bother glaring at me, still focused on the janitor trying to sweep up a cobweb on the roof. We're tucked behind a large radiator, thankful that the breeze from earlier is gone. The moon has been slowly creeping up the navy blue sky for almost an hour, inviting Keigo and me to crawl out of the abandoned building we've been hiding in all day. The night is our domain, our time to shine.
And this janitor's, too, I guess. I peel Keigo's hand off my mouth and scowl at him. "Why's he sweeping the roof at this time of night?" I scoff, my voice teetering between a whisper and a growl.
"I don't know," Keigo answers. "People have to make money. Keeps the world spinning."
"Okay," I blurt, "but why the roof? Who the fuck sweeps a roof?"
Keigo smacks me, and I fight back my instinctive high-pitched yelp. "You're gonna get us caught, jackass. Hush. I want this night to be perfect."
I roll my eyes, shoving him away from me for dramatic effect. He still hasn't told me what he's planning for this magical night, but I know that if I ask him again, he'll probably slit my throat with one of his feathers.
So instead, I shift my weight to a more sturdy couched position, warming my hands with blue flames. My eyes are focused on my target: the janitor whacking a spider with a broom.
Before I can pounce on the ignorant fucker, Keigo pecks me on the cheek, destroying my balance and focus. Keigo chuckles under his breath. "Don't kill him," he tells me. I scoff at him, adjust my feet and the heat of my flames, and dive forward.
The janitor screams at the sight of my overbearing fire, waving his broom like a child swinging around a pool noodle. A laugh bubbles in my throat, and I grab the broom with my right hand, watching as the wood erupts into flames. It disintegrates in seconds, pulling a dry scream from the janitor's throat.
I step forward, and the janitor scrambles backward. Another step, another gasp of pure horror. I keep going, enjoying this much more than I should, but the fun is cut short when He he over a stray pebble. The janitor goes tumbling over the edge, flailing his arms around in a weak attempt to latch onto something.
I'm laughing so hard, I don't even notice Keigo's clump of feathers that dive over the side and swoop him back up.
"I told you not to kill him," Keigo scolds me. With three large feathers holding the janitor by the collar of his work uniform, Keigo picks him up and plops him down on the flat concrete roof. He's a sobbing, blubbering mess, and I'm laughing so hard I think I cracked a rib.
"Sp-spare my l-life, please!" the janitor cries. "I hav- I have a w-wife and- and two kids, infant twins! I c-can't--"
"It's fine, we're not gonna hurt you," Keigo tells the man. "We're just here to steal some stuff, okay? Do you know where that trapdoor over there leads to?"
"Th-the storage room," the janitor gasps. "H-here! I have the keys! Take them, a-and let me live!" He scrambles around a bit more and rips the ring of keys from his back pocket, shoving them in Keigo's direction. Keigo thanks him with a wide smile and skips over to the trapdoor.
