NOVEMBER 20th, 1990
SEATTLE ࿐ྂ"I'M TWENTY-THREE, CHRIS."
Chris stood from his spot on the couch to greet Delia, who had obviously just woken up, hair stuck up, one leg of her sweats rolled up, (really, they were his sweats, that she had yet to give back.)
"Happy birthday Del." He hugged her, then stepped back, looking her up and down. "Looking old as fuck."
"Shut up." She was quick to reply, shaking her head at her friend tiredly.
"I'm just joking, beautiful."
"Don't try to redeem yourself."
He laughed as he returned to the couch, back to his bowl of cereal. She retreated back to her bedroom to get dressed for breakfast, for the past few years it'd been tradition for Chris to take her to breakfast, normally just some place like the Doghouse.
Delia got dressed and did her makeup, striving to look better than normal on her day. She replaced her low-rise, baggy jeans with tighter 505s, along with a cropped long-sleeve Soundgarden shirt that she wore just to spite Chris.
They chose to walk to the Doghouse, due to the good weather, which really wasn't that great- it just wasn't raining.
The two took their regular booth in the corner of the restaurant, waiting for their food as Chris passed over the gift bag Delia had been asking about all morning.
She opened it excitedly, knowing Chris, the gift would be perfect. And it was, he'd made two mixtapes for her, bought an older copy of an Edgar Allan Poe short story collection.
Though she wholeheartedly loved the gifts, his card, like always, was her favorite. This time, he'd also included a folded up paper which was a list of the songs on one of the mixtapes, he explained why he'd chosen each song.
One- Mudhoney, If I Think... chose this cause I know you like it, also reminds me of you
Two- The Stooges, Little Doll... your 'anthem' (except no more cigs)
Three- Mother Love Bone, This Is Shangrila... for the nights spent in Andy's garage
She read slowly, glancing up at Chris and smiling. "This is amazing, thank you." She continued reading, going through a flurry of memories and emotions.
Four- Pixies, Where Is My Mind... for the long ass talk we had about that one lyric about the fish
"Except the little fish bumped into me!" Delia recalled, remembering listening to Surfer Rosa with Chris when it first came out.
"What?"
"Track four, cmon." She said, and Chris grinned, recalling what he'd put as the fourth song.
Five- Nirvana, About A Girl... you like this song, I think
Six- AIC, It Ain't Like That... when I was drunk and making you listen to facelift, you really wanted to shut it off, but didn't
Seven- Temple Of The Dog, All Night Thing... song we just finished, thank you for the many, many long nights
"Oh my god. Can I listen to it?"
