“Great news!”

Dominik’s shout from inside the cottage made Barra and Al jump. Their peaceful afternoon on the porch vanished as they instantly went on high alert.

Dominik ran out, waving his phone like a trophy. “Your wanted status... it’s been cleared! You’re no longer DPO!”

Barra and Al exchanged a look of pure disbelief.

“Your father is back, right?” Barra asked Al, his voice cautious.

Alma nodded slowly, a flicker of doubt in her eyes. “Did Papa... actually change his mind?”

“Could be! Maybe you’ve finally got the blessing!” Dominik chirped, his face glowing with excitement.

But Barra remained silent, his brows knitting together. “Something’s wrong,” he muttered.

“You don't believe it?” Alma looked at him, her anxiety returning.

Dominik sat down, confused. “What’s the catch, Bar?”

“If the status was cleared because your father gave us his blessing, why hasn't your mother called? And... I don't trust your father to just surrender. He’s a General. He doesn't retreat; he strategizes.”

Dominik whistled. “Man, future lawyers really do overthink everything. But... it makes sense.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want the police involved anymore. Or...” Barra trailed off, his gaze sharpening.

“Or what?” Dominik pressed.

“Or he already knows where we are!” Barra’s eyes locked onto Dominik. “You changed your SIM card, right?”

“Yeah! I replaced the whole phone! My mom said it was clean, no one’s been looking.”

“And your friend? The one with the brother in the police force?”

“He’s on our side. That’s how I’m getting these updates. He said I’m safe.”

Barra shook his head slowly. “It’s too quiet. It’s a trap.”

Alma was visibly trembling now. “Are they following us, Bar?”

“We’ve been here for two days. If they were following us, we’d have been in handcuffs yesterday.” Barra stood up abruptly. “Start packing. Now. My gut is screaming at me.”

Panic set in. Alma rushed into the room to grab their things.

“Are we leaving right now?” Dominik stood up, his playful demeanor gone.

“Yes. Get the truck ready.”

“But you have to say goodbye to Milla! Didn’t you promise to drop by her place this afternoon to pick up food?”

Barra froze. “Milla...” he whispered. His blood ran cold. “Dom, what time is it?”

“Five o'clock.”

Barra’s eyes widened in horror. “Move, Dom! The police will be here any second!”

Dominik didn't ask questions. He scrambled.

Ten minutes later, the truck roared out of the homestay, tires spitting gravel.

“Dom, take the backroads! Avoid the main strip!” Barra barked.

“On it!” Dominik checked his GPS, but suddenly his phone vibrated violently. “It’s Milla!”

“Don’t answer it! Turn it off!” Barra roared.

“Bar...” Alma gripped his hand, her face deathly pale.

“Police cruiser ahead!” Barra hissed. Through the window, he spotted a tan sedan—a plainclothes unit—stashed behind a parked truck. “Turn, Dom! Now!”
