Violet was a successful "booktuber"... or well... successful enough to be living in her dream home out in the forest albeit highly in debt.
Her channel was called FadeToViolet she introduced herself to her audience as Miss Violet every video.
She was originally a self published author for some time semi-unsuccessfully and found an audience online discussing books and the publishing industry which made her more money than her books did for many years.
One year she went to an online influencer convention in California and did a book signing.
She sat down at a table and gave a talk about writing catchy loglines and then afterwards she was suppose to sign books.
The line before her grew steadily. Fans approached with copies of her books. Most composed, but others more excitable.
Each interaction was brief—a signature, a few words. Violet didn't too often find it in her to do "influencer things", she wasn't sure if she was good at faking warm smiles for such a long stretch of time.
She hadn't noticed him until it was his turn in line.
He greeted her with a small nervous smile on his flushed face. He wore a dark plain sweatshirt and his face was framed by his feathery black hair.
He held a copy of her new book and a very worn in or "well loved" copy of her first book.
"I uh... I really... I always..." When he finally got words out his voice was more raspy than she was expecting. He sounded all choked up.
"..."
There were different types of nervous fans. There were excitable chatty ones. There were ones that got caught in the headlights. This man was a little of both; very fidgety and having trouble pushing words out.
"Would you mind signing both of these, please?"
It was an unusual voice, not very deep, but textured. Extremely distinctive.
She smiled up at him, "Sure."
"Thank you." he said softly, his cheeks were pink. He averted his gaze to stare at the table. Violet felt her ears getting hot. She was trying not to smirk. She knew she shouldn't enjoy a fan having a crush on her this much.
He passed the first book to her with his shaking hands. She noticed he had black fingernail polish.
She remembered noticing his nervous fidgeting. She remembered having the thought that he was cute.
He leaned in closer when Violet glanced up at him briefly to grab the second book to sign. She noticed an ultra platinum security pass was dangling off his lanyard. This was the type of pass only really massive content creators got.
The holographic logo on the laminated card shined menacingly and below it he had written his online handle. "Caselock".
His penmanship was neat and pretty his "C" looped elegantly.
She smiled to herself. She had always had a soft spot for good penmanship. There had always been something romantic to her about it.
With the second book now signed, she handed back the book and smiled up at him. He swallowed and nodded, taking his books back, he held them securely to his chest.
She reached out to shake his hand and he took it. His fingers were ice cold, but his palms were clammy and warm. He shook her hand lightly and she could feel his larger hand and spidery fingers tremble against her smaller hand.
They made eye contact again, for as long as he could stand it. She couldn't make out the color of his eyes in this light. She could tell touching her burned him like a stove. There was a fun rush of power, but also this tingle at the base of her spine. She felt she was better at hiding it then him, but she could feel it too.
