She met him with a smile wide in relief to see him back and in such a better mood. She tried to swallow down the awful feeling of jealousy.

"I got a little surprise for you! Close your eyes!"

"What kinda surprise?"

"Before we go see Brayden and Aubree I have decided to try to put together something nice for you because... well this trip has been really shitty so far."

"Alright open your eyes!"

Before Violet looks at the surprise she accidentally looks at Case and sees him smiling and his eyes sparkling and she can see how much he wants to make her happy. Case nervously giggles and directs her with his hands to look at the table.

Violet found Case had put a single rose in an old  glass pop bottle. At the table were two small cardboard packages that had been opened inside both were several neatly wrapped  triangles in brown parchment paper.

"This is very cute." Violet nodded approached the boxes. She could smell cheese and eggs. She realized the small wrapped triangles were food. She turned to him and pressed a thumb to his cheek. He seemed to swoon a little and Violet leaned in and pressed her lips to his in a sweet brief kiss. Case smiled down on her still blushing as he motioned to the boxes,

"The left box is veggie sandwiches, those have hummus. I know you like that... The other box is of egg and cheese sandwiches which were my top pick."

Violet moved her hand to grab an egg and cheese sandwich could feel the heat through the paper as she grabbed one.

When she bit in she found it extremely fresh. The bread was light fluffy and crisp. The egg inside was warm and thick.

She noticed Case staring at her reaction intensely waiting for the verdict.

"Divine." she declared. He beamed in happiness. He took another bite of his own sandwich and seemed to be savoring the taste. She wasn't sure why he was behaving like he made them himself.

"You know what you just took a bite of?" his tone was mischievously threatening.

"What?" Violet asked her brows knitting together,

"A gas station sandwich."

Violet's brow raised in skepticism,

"No kidding?" she chuckled looking down at her sandwich for the answer.

"My dad made me help out at the bar sometimes, so after school I'd go pick up these sandwiches on the way for me and Brayden."

"Sentimental over sandwiches, huh?" Violet asked in a pondering voice. After she polishes off the first little triangle sandwich. She finds herself licking at her fingers. Case's eyes briefly follow them before pulling away to smile down at the table,

"They are really nostalgic to me, I'm so glad that place is still open." Case admitted with a sweet soft smile. From outside a strong red neon light flickered on with a loud buzz. Violet turned to the rose in it's make-ship vase.

If her mother could see her right now she would scold her about the amount of sodium in these sandwiches, as well as her choice in company.

Her father would likely point out the most cynical reading of Case's actions imaginable as Case's father had done to her.

Regardless, Violet reached into the other box to see if the veggie sandwiches were as equally delicious.

Fresh tomatoes and red onion play nicely with the hummus and basil. The cracked pepper cuts through all of it giving it a nice spark. It feels healthy and fresh and the inner voice of her mother backs off.
