Case got out the car and jogged over to the waves, "Oh look!" Case pointed in the distance to an active lighthouse. Violet nodded in acknowledgement.
"It's about two hundred years old." she was drawing on boring school fieldtrip experience for that fun fact.
The wind was picking up when they decided to get out of the car and the ocean was looking more treacherous. The sand and rocks stretched out far in both directions behind them the forest was in the distance before that tall grass and parking lots. They were totally alone.
Violet put her hands in her pocket and followed after him as they walked the shoreline. Case kept picking up things, seashells, sticks, rocks. He picked up the remains of a crab and started looking it over, eventually he put it down. Violet felt his curiousness cute even if it seemed really unsanitary.
Case held up a large wad of seaweed with a stick looking over it, "You ever eat dried seaweed? They got this tempura spicy seaweed, it's good."
Violet shook her head.
Case pulled out his phone again she watched him wander away from her biting at his fingernails. She assumed in the the cyberworld running parrel to theirs the destruction of "rosscodesbiscotti" was keeping his mind split. The sadness was still thick in the air.
"I wish I knew how to help you. I know you're not..." her voice was silenced by the presence of his hand on hers. He grabbed her hand and weaved their fingers together.
The two slowly walked along the sand, hand in hand. The ocean stretched out in front of them dark and full of white stars. The waves gently crashed against the shore a rolling rhythm. After awhile the beach almost sounded silent.
She closed her eyes tightly. "I'm sorry. I just..." she said slowly. She looked over the ocean. She felt so utterly powerless made a couple of noises before clearing her throat, "I'm not making sense."
"I don't want to talk about it right now, Violet." Case said quietly and she could hear the hurt in his voice. He looked away from her and towards the ocean.
She searched for a new subject. She could still see his hands trembling every once in awhile although the ocean breeze was a little cold that night. Violet took a deep breath and picked a place to start her story,
"At one point my family lived right next to the ocean..."
Case's head turned right away.
"My sister and I would walk down the shore, all the time, it was all we wanted to do was get out of this awful tiny trailer my parents had."
She paused and noticed Case watching his eyes looked red and shiny.
"-And we were kid's and we went through this mermaid phase we just wanted to pretend to be mermaids all day long, we wrote elaborate mermaid soap operas and we played all the characters."
For a moment she thought that Case would perhaps in retrospect, depending on what he had read; found her bringing up Petra uncomfortable. Instead he had this bittersweet smile hazel eyes trained entirely on her face,
Case laughed, "That's so damn cute."
His laugh made her feel warm inside. The warmth in his words felt more real then his expression.
"Lemme hear some of the stories!" he exclaimed and she could see the pure unadulterated curiosity in his eyes as he spoke,
"Oh, u-uhm." Violet stammered.
"Come on you gotta!"
"I wish, I wrote them down. It was mostly about fighting over sunken treasure and mermaid weddings."
"Romantic-pirate-mermaids, cool." she could feel his eyes on her even when she looked away to remember more.
"Oh! A reoccurring villain was a giant shark and I loved to play the shark." Violet giggled, but she struggled to say anything specific. Her face couldn't help, but fall a little even though she was suppose to be the one lightening the mood.
"Well..." Case began shuffling his shoulders looking to her,
"I hope you bite." he smirked,
Violet playfully swatted his arm.
"You're not alone, I always liked to be the villain too." he said quietly smiling a little now.
He ran a finger lightly against the palm of her hand, his eyes staring deeply into hers. She really wanted to kiss him, but she ended up holding him in her arms instead. Case snuggled into her.
When she looked up at him his eyes closed immediately and he went in to kiss her.
When their lips touch she felt like she could taste the salt of the beef jerky and the sea. Case let out a soft moan, Violet felt like she was drowning in a puddle of bliss at the noise.
"I like the taste of you." he whispered between a kiss. She saw his eyes briefly before hers fluttered closed again. Butterflies spread as he seemed to get more and more frenzied,
"Can I taste more tonight?" he whispered sweetly and pressed his mouth back to hers. Her spine shivered. She found herself petting his soft hair which turned into her halfheartedly grabbing a fistful. He moaned in approval bending at the waist lower deepening the kiss.
She began to pull away, gently caressing his cheek as she smiled up at him. He was gasping and blushing. She felt the strain of her trying to make the kiss sweet as he tried to pull her under again with lingering hot kisses.
Eventually he seemed to accept it and he kissed her forehead a few times and rested his head on hers. When he melted overtop of her she felt at peace. He muttered something quickly, Violet almost missed him saying it at all,
"Did you say something?"
They shifted how they were standing together and Violet came into contact with his hardness. Although unlike many other moments of involutory touching Case stayed still. And he was right she wanted him really bad, and if it had been an uneventful day she thought she would have easily tried to get his clothes off and take this further. In the haze of this feeling this had to end soon it was easy to tell herself she was brave. Her eyes couldn't help but look around and see how empty this place was. How alone they were.
When she looked up his face was extremely red.
"I said... I have a condom in my wallet." he was breathless.
It felt like he had read the bad irresponsible part of her mind.
"Case, you've... been through a lot tonight."
The corners of his mouth quivered and fell in an instant and so did her heart. His grip loosed and his hands dropped to his sides.
"It was just a shitty night, that's all. It sucked, but it's fine. It's been fine forever." Case scratched at the back of his neck there was something a little too intense in his eyes making Violet feel like she had made the right call already and that made it easier. He was trying hard to act casual. Her heart was still pounding, "You just reexperienced it tonight. "
He paused and looked at her. It was like she was bringing analyzed by a scanner with his eyes, she just wasn't sure what he was looking for and so she decided bringing herself into it would resolve it.
"And I... I don't feel normal either, to be honest." she added.
His expression changed then he looked worried and like he wanted to crawl out of his skin, "I.. uh, y-you're uncomfortable, just got swept up in the moment, sorry."
Case's hands were still shaking as he forced out some light laughter.
Case put more space between them putting his hands in his pockets, "You know what this beach is missing? Horseshoe crabs! Gotta be a horseshoe crab around here somewhere, those creepy little fucks are nocturnal." he pantomimed their scuttling legs with his fingers.
The seashells Case collected ended up in Violet's glove compartment. Case fell asleep on the ride home. She listened to his odd little snore and felt like she could never get bored of him. Only happier.
