"How could you?" Aru whispered, desperately trying to swallow back tears and flatten the tremble in her voice. She wanted to reach out and grab her hand, to feel that familiar warmth that stemmed from love, but it was as if an ice-cold wall was growing in between them, freezing over the bonds that held them together and cracking it in two.
"I didn't want this." She replied bowing her head slightly to avoid looking the other in the eye. "But you know how it is, family should come first. Always. I'm sorry, Aru." She glanced at her one more time, and Aru saw that she no longer recognized those cold, golden eyes. And with that, another loved one left her in the dust. Aru tried to say something, anything before she would disappear for good, but her vocal cords had turned to stone and the words clung to her throat, unsaid and unheard.
But we are family.
