"You're Abby's father?" The doctor asked Brendon. "Fathers?"

"Oh, no. I'm his security guard. Not his partner. I'm Abby's Uncle," Zack explained.

The doctor nodded and introduced himself.

"Please," Brendon said, trying to hold back tears. "Please. Abby. How's Abby?"

"Yes. So, your daughter was hit by a car travelling about 35 miles an hour. She's sustained some severe injuries. She's had a head injury, which we're monitoring to see if there is any brain involvement. We've sent her for an MRI of her head to see if there's any damage. She's got some internal bleeding in her abdomen that will require surgery that we need your permission for..."

"Yes. Anything you can do to save her, please," Brendon interrupted.

"I have the forms here, but let me tell you first, what we're dealing with," the doctor said.

"Sorry," Brendon said. He was excited. The doctor was telling him that Abby was alive.

"She's been in and out of consciousness since arriving here," the doctor said.

"Has she said anything?"

"She asked for you once," the doctor said. "She's got a broken left arm, several contusions, lacerations and as mentioned, the internal bleeding. She has four broken ribs, one punctured her lung and that lung has collapsed. She was coughing up blood. And..."

Brendon wasn't sure he wanted to hear more.

"She seems to have a spinal cord injury. We're not sure right now if it's because of swelling around the spine. But she's not reacting to any painful stimuli in her extremities," the doctor finished.

Brendon sighed with relief. Even if Abby was paralyzed, he didn't care. He'd still give her the best life he could. They'd get through this. He'd get her through this. He still had his daughter. That was the most important thing.

"Sorry, what?"  The doctor had said something.

"She's in an MRI now and will be taken for surgery from there. We need to control that internal bleeding. From there she'll go to the ICU. You can head there and let the nurses know you're there and as soon as Abby is back, they'll take you to her."

The doctor asked for some more medical information on Abby, allergies and such, and shook hands with Brendon who thanked the doctor for saving his daughter.

"She asked me to tell you she's sorry," the doctor said.

Tears welled up in Brendon's eyes. If anyone needed to apologize, it was him. And thanks to this doctor and his staff, he'd be able to.

Zack, in the meantime, was keeping everyone at the venue informed. This was going to take a while for Abby to recover from. The next two dates being cancelled wasn't going to be enough. Their manager was going to work on that once they had more information on Abby's condition and prognosis.

Brendon just blindly followed Zack, who led him to the ICU waiting room and registered them with the nurses. He got Brendon sitting and settled and made some phone calls.

They sat and flipped through magazines, not really reading them. Zack was impressed that Brendon's anxiety hadn't gotten the better of him. Having Abby to focus on had been good for him.

Brendon was scrolling through social media, and noticed the messages from fans on the announcement that tonight's concert had been cancelled. They were all hoping Brendon was okay, as the announcement said the concert was cancelled due to a crew member injury. It could have meant anyone associated with the tour, but the fans immediately assumed Brendon had been hurt.

"What if it's Abby?" Someone posted.

"Oh. I didn't think of Abby. You don't think it's Abby, do you?" Another replied.

"Doubtful. B is sooooo dedicated to her, he probably never lets her out of his sight. 😊. It's so cute," someone else posted.

That choked Brendon up a little. Because he had let her out of his sight. And he'd upset her. And he hadn't been a very good father recently.

He kept reading through the comments. There were the few haters, there always was. But most people were just speculating who might have been injured and hoping they were okay.

Brendon was hoping his daughter was okay. He so desperately wanted to post but he didn't. He'd let his management team take care of that for now.

Hours had passed. Brendon couldn't tell you how many (it was two hours). A voice saying his name broke him out of his self-imposed trance like state. He looked up and was shocked to see the person standing in front of him.

"Patrick? What are you doing here?" He asked.

"Zack texted me and I live in Chicago, in case you've forgotten.  I was going to come to the concert tonight but, we'll, it seems it's been cancelled."

Brendon smirked a little  he stood up and hugged his friend.

"Thanks for coming," he said.

"Of course," Patrick said.

The three men sat around the waiting room. Brendon's phone kept ringing with calls and texts. The calls he sent to voicemail. The texts, he'd answer only if they were critical and needed an answer now.

Patrick and Zack both kept trying to keep Brendon distracted. Abby's surgery could take hours.

Kala wound up arriving after a while. She'd been helping with some things around the venue because of the cancellation. As soon as she heard about the accident, she went to the bus and packed a bag for Brendon full of clean clothes. She knew he wouldn't leave Abby's side until Abby was ready to leave the hospital.

She also packed some things for Abby. She didn't know the extent of Abby's injuries yet.

"Brendon, Zack, oh! And Patrick! Hi! What's happening? Where's Abby?"

Zack got up and hugged Kala.

"She's in surgery. We're still waiting to hear how she's doing or when she might be brought up here."

"What happened?" Kala asked. She knew Abby had run and been hit by a car. But she hadn't heard all the details of what had happened.

"Internal bleeding, a head injury that they're monitoring to see if there's brain involvement, a broken arm and a possible spinal cord injury, but there's so much swelling they aren't sure how bad. But apparently she can't feel her arms and legs."

Kala sank into the chair beside her. How much could this kid take? She'd been beaten so badly when Brendon had actually gone and rescued her from her foster "parents". Then she'd nearly drowned when Joe had thrown her in the pool once her cast from the broken leg her foster father had given her was off. And then the assault at school.

Now this.
