The first week and a half of the tour went by so quickly. It had all gone off without a hitch. Abby had actually enjoyed some of the museums and places Bonnie had taken her to in the cities they were visiting. She'd come back to the venue with some tidbit of information that she'd found interesting and would do more research on the internet about it.
Brendon made sure Abby's schoolwork was being kept up with, and she was keeping on top of it as well. Bonnie was keeping Abby engaged and enthralled and the two were becoming fast friends.
In some of their downtime, Jake took Abby under his wing and taught her a little about photography. She had taken some photos from the side stage, and they had come out really well.
This morning, Abby and Bonnie were already planning their day and were dressed and ready to go when Brendon got up from bed.
"Behave yourself," Brendon said, giving his daughter a kiss on the head and a hug as they headed out to visit a museum on the outskirts of town.
"Don't I always?" Abby said.
"Okay, don't be a brat," Brendon grinned.
"Now, for that, I make no promises," Abby grinned back.
Brendon rolled his eyes and laughed as Bonnie and Abby waved from the bus's front door.
Brendon poured himself some coffee and sat down to review some papers his manager had dropped off. He looked through some emails and texted Zack to let him know he was awake and to find out what was happening on the other buses. He checked the itinerary the manager had sent over and realized he was supposed to be at a radio station in twenty minutes.
Brendon quickly put on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, a hoodie over it, a baseball cap, and sunglasses for when he was in the car. Zack came onto the bus just as he came out from the back of the bus.
"You ready to go?" Zack asked. Brendon nodded.
They got into a car that had been ordered by the radio station and headed out.
The interview at the radio station went well. The interviewers asked about Abby, her accident, her recovery, how that had affected the tour and how Brendon was rescheduling this tour to ensure he had time with his daughter. Brendon glowed as he spoke about his daughter. He was proud of how hard she had worked to return from her injuries, how she was ensuring she got her schoolwork done while out on tour with her dad, and how Brendon was now managing parenthood along with a tour schedule. They talked about the album, the music, what it meant to Brendon, and how the fans received it. They also asked about Sarah since the album's dedication was to her and Abby, and Brendon admitted how deeply depressed he had been after losing her and how much Abby had helped him heal from that loss.
"I still miss her—every single day. But having Abby to focus on it has really made the pain a little duller. Abby is smart and funny. She's always got me on my toes. The things she comes up with and the amount of information she looks into after she comes back from a trip to a museum or something with her tutor it's absolutely amazing to watch her. The whole world has opened up to her, and she's reopened the whole world to me," Brendon smiled.
At the end of the interview, after saying hi to some of the staff, signing some autographs and taking some photos, Brendon and Zack took the car back to the venue, where Brendon had a few things to take care of as well. He had some things to sign for fans and for radio and TV station giveaways, as well as soundcheck and a few other things he wanted to get done around the bus and the dressing room.
By show time, Bonnie and Abby hadn't returned from their trip. He sent a text to Abby to check in and told Zack to let him know somehow when Abby returned and to make sure to bring her and Bonnie to watch the show.
Throughout the show, I looked towards side stage as appropriate, and during the outfit changes, I asked Zack if he'd seen Abby and Bonnie and he said no. I know he sent someone out to the bus to see if they were there, but there was nothing. Abby hadn't texted, they hadn't made it back to the venue. I told Zack to start calling around. To call Bonnie's phone and Abby's.
When the show was over and I got offstage, I connected with him immediately.
"I sent someone to stay by the bus in case they went straight there but neither of them are picking up their phones and neither of them have called," Zack said.
"Where are they? Should we call the police? I don't know what else to do," I said.
It was eleven at night. There wasn't any reason I could think of that they'd still be out. Stores would be closed, restaurants would be closing, no tourist spot would still be open.
But they weren't in the venue, they weren't on the bus, and they weren't answering their phones.
Taking my phone from Zack I pulled up Life 360 and Find My IPhone. Their location services were also off.
My daughter and her tutor had disappeared off the face of the earth.
"I think we need to call the police," I said, shaking. "Their phones are off and location services are disabled. I can't find them. The last spot showing is here. Before they left for the day."
Zack nodded and got in touch with some of the local staff to help facilitate getting through to the police. There were police in the venue as part of the regular security for the show, so Zack managed to find their guy in charge who put a call in to the local police station and helped us try to find my daughter and her tutor.
