After finding the spare key that Blake had mentioned to us, Dylan and I walked into the house.
I set down my bags by the door and looked around the house that would now be my home. I had been here before, but I could hardly remember it. It was a lot cleaner this time than the last, but it still stank of cigarettes and old pizza, which would definitely take some getting used to.
"Let's go put our stuff upstairs Britt, then we can wait for Mom." Said Dylan while helping me grab my bags and walking to the stairs.
The one other time we had been here, Dylan and I had to share a room. This time there was another bedroom, that had just been storage the last time we were here.
"I'll take this one," said Dylan stopping at the new bedroom, "you can have the one we normally stay in."
He turned into the room and handed me the rest of my luggage. I walked further down the hall to my room. They were the only two rooms in the upstairs, along with the bathroom. I turned into my room. It looked untouched since I had visited her the last time. She must not come up here much.
I set down my stuff and sat on the bed. This was my new home. I quickly started to unpack, I had the first day at my new school the next day, so I needed to go ahead and get all my stuff ready.
As I unpacked I heard the door downstairs open... She was home. I walked out into the hallway on the upstairs floor, where I saw Dylan, he had already heard her as well. We looked at each other and then walked downstairs together.
I heard her laughing, which meant she probably wasn't alone. We got downstairs only to find our mother with a man. She had forgotten we were coming.
"Hey mom..." Said Dylan awkwardly since she had not seen us when we got downstairs. She turned towards us. She still had the same long brown hair and blue eyes. She seemed happier now than the last time we had come, but she also looked a lot older than the last time we had come.
"Oh shoot," she muttered as she turned towards the man standing next to her, "Bill, I am so sorry I had forgotten that today was the day my children were coming in from New York. I'm afraid you're going to have too leave for today, but I will see you at work tomorrow."
"Ok," said Bill, "Goodbye Miranda." He then leaned in and kissed her, then walked back out the front door.
"Dylan, Britt," my mom said awkwardly, "how have yall been...?"
"Fine mom," I said, "we started unpacking upstairs, we can just go ahead and get back to that now."
"Oh... Ok then, do you uh want any help with that."
"No." Grumbled Dylan as he turned around and headed back up the stairs.
I gave my mom a sympathetic look then followed Dylan up.
We probably should've caught up with our mother. Told her about how are life has been these past few years. We hadn't seen her in a long time. Most kids would be ecstatic to see their mom, but that's not really the relationship we have with her. We were really little when our parents got the divorce so we hardly knew our mom. Dylan was older than me, so the divorce was harder on him. Seeing mom with another man probably made him mad and uncomfortable, since he had known her better. She wasn't really like a mom to me, more of a distant aunt sort of person.
"You ok?" I asked Dylan as we stood outside his room.
"Ya I'm fine, but it's getting late, we should probably go ahead and go to sleep."
"Ya ok."
I went into my room and got ready for bed but I realized I had forgotten my charger out in the car from earlier today. I was already in my pajamas, but I went ahead and went outside to grab it anyways.
It was dark and cool outside now. Not like it had been earlier today. There were so many more stars in the sky out here in California than in New York. I looked up and I could recognize some constellations. I saw Orion's Belt, and the Big Dipper.
"Cute pajamas." I hear someone say.
I turned towards the direction of the voice and saw Blake standing in his yard again.
"What are you doing out here?" I asked wondering why on earth he would be standing out in his yard at night by himself.
"I just got home... Why are you out here?" He smirked and walked towards me into my yard.
"I have to get something from the car, but I got caught up looking at the stars."
"Have you never seen a star before?"
"Not like this, not where I'm from."
"Could you find the Little Dipper, that's my favorite."
"Um no where is it?"
"Right there." Blake stepped behind me as he put his hand on my waist and pointed up towards the sky. He was so close, I could feel him breathing. I looked up to wear he was pointing and my face brushed against his.
"Oh ya," I breathed out heavily, " I can see it now." I then turned around to face him. I'm not sure why, but I just wanted to look into his eyes. I was breathing heavily. We just stood there for a minute as I looked into his eyes, his hand still on my waist. Finally I remembered why I had gone out there in the first place.
"I should um, probably go get my charger." I muttered as I pulled away and walked towards the car. I opened the door grabbed my charger and turned back around to walk to the house. Blake was still standing there.
"I hope to see you at school tomorrow Britt." He said as he winked then walked away.
I heavily breathed out one more time then walked back into the house, up to my room, and into my bed.
As I tried to go to sleep I couldn't stop thinking about Blake. I could still feel his hand on my waist and the beating of his heart.
