They've asked me my name as I wander the streets nearby their shops, bruised and bloody as if I just returned from Hell.
My sunken skin and unkept hair makes them shiver, and I see the beads of sweat run down their foreheads as they force themselves to feel pity for a girl that doesn't belong. A mistake, a flaw, a blemish in downtown Japan's sea of vibrancy and wonder.
"What is your name, you poor thing?" They ask, eyes glimmering with sympathy. "Where are your parents?"
My name is Y/N L/N.
And I'm about to die.
My mother, brother, and father were annihilated by a demon and this old diary is all I have. My only solace, my one memory I still possess of my childhood, my only fleeting glimpse of the past I can never grasp once again. Gone are days of laughter and mirth, and endless is the abyss of darkness my world has been tossed into. In the end, it looks as if we all fall victim to fate's cruel plans.
Yet, I still possess the slightest bit of something many have abandoned so long ago: determination. My conscience is tattered by the deaths, by the shock, by the loss — but I know with absolute certainty that dying with ecstasy in my heart will not be possible unless I eradicate the race of the creatures they call demons.
A target is drawn, and at its center is Muzan Kibutsuji, the demon progenitor. A heartless tyrant that begot centuries worth of bloodshed and carnage; nothing fuels his decisions except for what's best for him. I remind myself every day — to stay alive until I can witness his demise — when my heartbeat slows and my eyelashes flutter to whisk me away into Death's arms.
My goal now is to find the Demon Slayer Corps and become one of them; the first step in the series of many. Following my brother's footsteps, who was a successful member of the Corps. He put up a certainly valiant fight against the demon who arrived at our house one fateful evening, using everything he had. He used the Breathing Style of Water, but I could see aureate specks of yellow color within the blue trails that followed his blade. I was stunned watching my sibling in action, even though he was fighting for all our lives. To this day, I want to be able to fight like him.
I could sense the demon's enjoyment as he finished my entire family off while I watched from a crack in our closet. The bloodlust was palpable in his oddly rainbow eyes.
Joining the Corps seems highly impossible, given my health. Water is simple to get — there is a beautiful riverbank nearby — yet food is scarce, and hope is ebbing away.
But I have to make it.
I will rewrite my storybook with the sweet blood of victory, no matter how much it takes.
