Before I went to bed, I took a good look at my brother's blade once more.
The peace and quiet of my infirmary cot made me notice that the little embellishments on the Nirichin were not there just for show — they were his own designs, carved in the same manner as how he used to carve tree trunks back at home.
I traced an etched line of stars all the way to the very bottom of the blade, where my brother had left a message along with me and my parent's names — "If this lands in the hands of any of you, just know that I'll always be with you in both soul and spirit."
It makes me wonder if he knew that he would die long before he actually did.

Y/N had to pretend that she was asleep when somebody entered her room in the morning, spent over thirty minutes setting up a warm breakfast, folded her clothes for what seemed like three eternities, and never left.
"How long are you gonna be here for?" she laughed as she rose from her bed, spirits considerably lifted by yesterday's events.
"Ah! I'm sorry. I thought you were still asleep." A voice came from the other side of the room, where a girl her age stood. And for once, she wasn't — at least didn't look like — a Kakushi.
She whipped her hair to one side and smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Y/N. Your breakfast is on that table. Eat up, because your training begins in five minutes."
"What?"
"I said—"
"I heard you the first time," Y/N glared, shoveling spoons of yogurt, waffles, and fresh berries into her mouth. "What's your name? Oh, this is really good."
"Aoi Kanzaki. I'm glad you like it." She replied, folding up more stacks of clothes and placing then neatly on top of each other. "Tanjiro's overjoyed to be able to train with you."
"Tanjiro? The boy that got beat up by Sanemi?"
Aoi stared. "Er — yes. He's very sweet. You'll like him."
"I'll trust your judgement. What'd you put in this thing? It's the best thing I've tasted in ages."
"The blueberries are grown fresh from the nearby markets — I got them just for this month. We get the honey from right outside, where the beehives are. Shinobu's really good at luring the bees in. And the waffles and yogurt are made by the Kakushi."
Y/N slumped down onto her bed, smiling and content. "It tastes homemade."
Aoi plopped down on the side of the cot, the white apron she was wearing billowing out around her. "I'll make it again for you if you want, but we need to get going. Training begins in... approximately thirty seconds."
The two girls darted across hallways of Kakushi and Hashira, waving occasional greetings before they arrived at a spacious, nearly empty room. It would be entirely devoid of furniture if you ignored the small tables on two opposing walls.
