STEVE'S P.O.V (A month ago)

It was my first shift at Scoops Ahoy, Robin was my friend since high school, so we decided to apply for a job together.

I served the ice cream to all the customers, as I leaned my elbows on the counter and waited for customers to come at our shop.

I was looking outside the shop, the mall wasn't too crowded. I saw a waitress at the coffee shop, I don't know but she looked familiar. Like, I wasn't able to see her properly but I have seen her before.

I stared at her for a long time, I didn't heard Robin come from the backdoor. She snapped her fingers in front of my eyes, causing me to snap out of the trance.

"Hey, dingus. What are you staring at?"

"I have seen her before", I said, gesturing at the waitress.

"Yeah, she's probably a girl you dated before. Now, stop staring at other girls and do your work, Steve", Robin sighed.

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever", I sighed, and started working.

[Present]

We were done with our shifts, today. Robin and I were bored so we decided to hang out somewhere. Robin was locking the gate of the ice cream parlour, as I leaned on the railing.

"Hey, Robin. You hungry?"

"Yeah, I am starving!", she sighed.

"The diners aren't closed yet. Wanna have something?", I asked.

"Okay sure, where to?", she asked, turning to me after closing the shop.

"Uh, I don't know. You can decide"

"Okay, umm, let's go to the coffee shop. We can meet your mystery girl too", she smirked.

"Seriously, Robin?"

"Ohh, don't you think you have been zoned out at work everyday, staring at her", she teased.

"Okay, shut up. Let's go", I sighed. We walked to the coffee shop right in front of our ice cream parlour.

We entered the shop and sat in the booth. I looked around, trying to spot her. My eyes brighten up when I saw the waitress, she was serving coffee to a customer. I recognized her.

She is Y/N.

Y/N and I were paired up for many projects in high school. She was really sweet and kind, and because of her help, I was able to get good grades.

After the project, we became really close friends, and we used to hang out after school at the coffee shops.

After some months of our friendship, I realized I was falling for her. I had a huge crush on her, but I didn't knew if she felt the same. I met Nancy Wheeler, and I never saw Y/N after the last conversation we had at school.

I tried to move on but always thought of Y/N, even after Nancy and I were together, Y/N was always lingering in my thoughts.

"Stop staring at her, Steve", Robin whispered.

"She is Y/N. She was in high school, I had a huge crush on her. I don't know, but she went away before I could tell her", I whispered.

"Ohh, so this mystery girl is your crush", she smirked, before we could know, Y/N was already walking towards us.

"Hey", she says, taking out her notepad.

"May I take yo-", she stops when she looks at us.

"Wait, Steve?"

"Hi, Y/N", I smiled.

"Oh my god, I can't believe it's you!", she grinned, excitedly.

"Didn't knew you worked at the ice cream parlour", she smirked, looking at my uniform.

"Yeah, I work at Scoops Ahoy", I said, a bit embarrassed. She smiled.

"Its been ages, Y/N. How have you been?"

"I've been okay, I guess. Just got a job here and trying to make ends meet, you know?", she shrugged.

"Yeah, I understand that. But why did you disappear like that, N/N? We were best friends, you could have at least told me before leaving", I asked her.

"I know, and I'm sorry. Things were just not going well for me back then, and I needed to clear my head. My dad's work transferred suddenly, so I had no other choice but to leave town..I am sorry I didn't inform you. It all happened in a rush", she sighed.

"Yeah, and I guess I didn't even bothered to talk to you at that time. I am sorry", I said with an apologetic look on my face.

"No, no. Don't apologize. It's fine. We got shifted here now so I decided to get some work experience. Anyways, how are you and how's Nancy?"

"I am good and Nancy, uh, I don't know"

"Huh? you guys were to--"

"We broke up", I interrupted her.

"Ohh, I am so sorry. I didn't knew. I am extremely sorry", she apologized.

"Hey, hey, it's completely fine. I have moved on", I told her, smiling. She nodded and glanced at Robin

"Ohh, I am so sorry. Hi. I am Y/N L/N, Steve's friend", she shook her hand with Robin.

"I know. Nice to meet you. I am Robin Buckley", she gave me a teasing smirk before looking at her.

"Are you Steve's girlfriend?"

"No, no, no. We are platonic best friends with capital P. Actually, Steve lik--", she started rambling, but luckily before she could say something embarrassing, I nudged her arm, silently gesturing her to shut up.

"Sorry?"

"Nothing", Robin smiled, plastering an innocent smile on her face.

"Ohh, okay", Y/N chuckled, awkwardly.
"Shit, I am sorry, I didn't take your order. What would you like to have?"

"Two coffees and croissants, please"

"Two coffees and croissants, okay. It will take 15 minutes."

"Okay"

She nods and walks away to get our order, Robin started teasing me as I had to listen to her rambling for a whole 15 minutes.

Y/N walks to our table with a tray, I looked up at her, a small grin on my face.

"You know, N/N, I always knew you'd end up here", I smiled.

"What do you mean?", she asked, placing the tray infront of us.

"I mean, I know your obsession with coffee. You always loved coffee, and I remember how excited you used to get when we'd go to cafes together. It's like you were meant to work here", I chuckled, reminiscing the memories.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. It's actually kind of fun, too", she laughed.

We talked more, exchanging stories and laughing together. She expressed her disappointment on not being able to stay in touch with me, she told me how much she had missed me.

I told her how difficult it was for me when she was gone. But it was my fault, after I was with Nancy, I stopped hanging out with her and rarely talked to her.

After Nancy left me, I realized that Y/N was the one I needed, she was the one who understood me. I went to her house to apologize to her, but before I knew, she was gone.

I didn't expected for us to meet again, but I am really glad that I got a chance to apologize to her.

It was getting late so we left the cafe, I gave her my number and I nervously asked her out for dinner, she replied a 'yes!'.

I was happy and content. I realized that I was given a second chance to reunite with my long-lost best friend, and I was also given the chance to express my feelings for her which I was missing for long.
