"Breaking news, Westbound high school student Kyler Reed was found dead by a local river. Witnesses say he left the house around -" I clicked down the volume of the tv so I could hear the phone that was beside my ear better.

"Sorry about that Iris, also did you hear what the news said?" I asked my friend on the other side of the phone, I moved around on the couch while talking to get in a comfortable position.

"No, you know I don't watch the news, Maggie! What happened that's so important that you're watching the news?" She bright voice on the other line said.

"Well I saw that some dude died, his name was Kyler Reed."

"Oh, I remember him! He was in our algebra class, don't you remember? He was that guy who would never shut up about his girlfriend."

"That dude? Oh my gosh, I thought his name was Thomas for the longest time." I thought about the boy with his short brown hair and earrings. "I can't believe he's dead, who would've killed him?"
"I dunno but they must've hated his rants about politics just as much as me!" The girl giggled on the other side of the phone like he wasn't just alive and well in our classroom a few days ago.

"Iris, don't joke about the dead! You know they can hear your every word." I said joking slightly toward the end.

"I don't believe in any of that bull, If I wanted a ghost to chase after me I'd just summon one. No use though, he'd fall in love with me instantly!" We both laughed for a moment and both of us were silent for a bit not knowing exactly what to say next as I watched the tv, reading the small words going across it detailing the murder of Kyler.

"Man, it's kind of a shame though that we never got to know him. I'm sure he was a nice guy when he wasn't annoying to us."

"Come on Maggie, don't get all sad now! It's still technically the weekend, plus we're going to that party next weekend so be happy. At least you aren't the dead one, if you died I don't know what I'd ever do with myself!" She said it made me happy to know she cared for me so profoundly. We have been friends since 3rd grade and talk every single day so of course, we'd have a close bond.

"Aw Iris, that's so sweet! I am looking forward to that party still if nothing gets planned over it, I'm a very busy woman." I was hoping that the Christmas break would be staying time for me to hang out with my friends, it seems like my mom just wants to stay in the house for now so hopefully, I don't have to go anywhere soon.

"Yeah Mrs I'm 18 years old now, you're such an adult now. Don't grow up without me bestie, I'm still going to be turning the same age after Christmas!" She whined, she probably got the worst birthday date ever since it's so close to Christmas that people never remember her birthday. Luckily she's an only child so her parents spoil her on Christmas and her birthday.

"I'm not, anyway did you finish Shepard's work yet? I can't find any of the answers."

"OH MY GOD- I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT!" Iris exclaimed while blasting her voice into my poor ear, "I have to go do that now, could you send me some of the answers pretty please Maggie?" she begged.

"I just told you I don't have any of the answers either, guess we could try doing it with the guys during our lunch break." I proposed the solution to her and heard a small hum of approval on the other side of the phone. "Also we're still going to be matching outfits at the party right?"

"Yep! I've got my outfit sitting in my closet still, anyway I'm going to go take a shower now. T-T-Y-L Maggie!" She said in an excited tone, I said a small goodbye and hung up to phone.

Grabbing the small remote to the TV I turned up the volume to listen to the news, for some reason they were still going over the murder. Guess when something big happens in a small town that's the only thing they can talk about.
