When the two turtles slipped up to the surface, it was dark outside. Few people roamed the streets, but the sound of cats and dogs still broke the silence every once in a while.
Leo and Donnie snuck over to the nearest store. When they got there, they went straight for the back, avoiding cameras.
Dumpsters were filled to the brim with trash bags. A small light bulb flickered. It smelled awful.
"There." Donnie pointed to a vent. His arms reached for the cover, carefully taking it off. "After you," Donnie said as he waved his arm towards the entrance.
Leo climbed inside. If he'd been any bigger, he would've gotten stuck. Donnie carefully went after him, sealing the hole behind them with the cover. They landed on a tile floor. Brooms sat in the corner, a wet floor sign sitting in one of the isles. Glass doors lined one of the walls, sheltering several boxes of ice cream and waffles.
The two went off to find their tortillas. Some cars zoomed by the front of the store, unaware of the turtles inside. Why would anyone be in there anyway? It was closed, after all. After a while of roaming through people-ridden aisles, they finally find what they were looking for. "Got it!" Leo announced, holding up a bag of tortillas. "Let's go."
---
Almost as soon as they had arrived, they were gone, out of the store. The cats and dogs had stopped with their racket. Their owners must have gotten sick of the noise and wanted some sleep. The sounds of vehicles zipping by had come to a stop. It was eerie.
There weren't even crickets chirping.
It was so quiet that the boys didn't suspect that there would be a hippo coming up from behind them.
As the villain approached them from behind, the turtles felt a tingling in the back of their neck. Luckily, they were able to get out of the way before a ring had the chance to dice them up. Donnie and Leo away, weapons drawn. "Wow? Not even a dramatic monologue? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the-" Leo stopped, trying to think of what to say. Donnie was about to hold out his bo in front of Leo when Hypno sent his rings flying again.
The boys dodged, and Donnie tried to charge him before the rings got back into his hands. The hippopotamus doesn't wait, grabbing Donnie out of the air and chucks him into a building.
Crack.
Donnie's head hit the wall.
"Donnie!"
The world around Donnie goes quieter, except for the ringing in his ears. His eyes watered, and he rubbed the back of his head. That's going to leave a bruise. The turtle's vision is fuzzy, and he had to prop himself up with the bo near him. Even with its help, he almost stumbled over. The sound of Leo yelling for him snaps him back.
Shit.
Leo. Hypno.
Donnie curses as Leo keeps dodging, not even bothering to attack. They just look like blobs to Donnie. When his vision clears, he can see why. Leo's glancing over at his brother, checking to see if he's okay. "Donnie!"
Hypno's got his rings back. Donnie sits up. "I'm okay." He mumbles. The turtle's about to shout out a warning, but it's too late. The hippo smiles as he tosses a ring at Leo. He's distracted, and much closer to Hypno now. The ring shimmered as it glided through the air, aiming right at- "Leo!"
It grinded into Leo's arm, breaking through his skin immediately. It spun round and round, and it sparkled at Donnie again, as if teasing him. The turtle let out an ear-piercing scream as his arm was torn up, a mess of flesh and blood and bone. Donnie's arms flew out, snatching Hypno's rings out of his hands and his brother away. "What the-"
