Be My Mate

chapter 1

It happened suddenly. Yoongi was sitting in the university’s park with Jimin studying when a dead squirrel drops in his lap. Him and Jimin both scream before looking up.

A tiger hybrid was looking at Yoongi with soft eyes and an excited smile.

“Uh? Hi?” Yoongi says confused, while moving the dead animal away from him.

“Is the squirrel to your liking?” He asks dropping to his knees in front of Yoongi, tail moving excitedly. “I would’ve gotten something bigger but the squirrel was all I could find in the city. Please accept my gift! I wish to mate with you!”

Jimin hides his laughter behind his hand, pretending to cough.

“I-what?” Yoongi says.

“I wish to mate!” The hybrid says with a boxy smile.

“Taehyung!” Someone shouts.

The hybrid turns around waving excitedly to the person who shouted. Yoongi stares at Jimin with wide eyes, expressing his embarrassment.

“Hyung! I did it!” The hybrid says. “I gave him the squirrel and asked to mate!”

“Tae, no! You can’t do that!” The guy says alarmed

“Why not?” He asks sadly.

The guy turns to face Yoongi, “I am so sorry! Taehyung is new to the university. I’ve been trying to teach him how to blend in better.”

Yoongi looks at the dead animal, unsure of what to say.

“Taehyung, we don’t give people dead animals. That’s a hybrid thing, not a human thing,” the man says.

The hybrid looks at the dead animal with sad eyes, his ears dropping flat on his head before looking at Yoongi, “I’m sorry.”

Yoongi feels his heart break a little, “It’s okay. I’m Yoongi, it’s nice to meet you.”

“I’m Taehyung,” the hybrid says shyly.

“I’m Jimin! I like your ears!” Jimin shouts happily.

Taehyung’s ears flicker, “Thank you, they’re natural.”

“I’m Namjoon. I work here at the university.”

“You teach the hybrids how to socialize?” Jimin asks.

Namjoon nods, “That along with everything they need to know in order to survive in the city. Taehyung started last week.”

“So why did you give Yoongi a squirrel?” Jimin asks.

Taehyung plays with his fingers, shyly looking at the ground, “I thought he was beautiful so I wanted to get him a gift so I can court him…and then mate with him.”

Yoongi feels his face heat up.

“Tae, humans don’t like dead animals like hybrids do. We prefer gifts that we can keep, something simple,” Namjoon explains gently.

Taehyung’s eyes light up, then he runs aways searching for something. Namjoon sighs as he shakes his head.

“So…what do I do with this?” Yoongi asks looking at the squirrel.

“I’ll get rid of it,” Namjoon says.

He takes out a doggy bag and picks up the dead animal.

“Honestly I thought he was a cutie,” Jimin says.

Taehyung comes rushing back, breathing heavily. He drops to his knees, a big smile on his face as he extends his arm towards Yoongi, opening his hands.

“I got you this rock!” Taehyung says happily.

“That-I didn’t mean…,” Namjoon simply sighs.

“Did I do it wrong?” Taehyung asks softly, looking down at his rock.

Yoongi shakes his head as he takes the rock from Taehyung, “Thank you. I’ve…always wanted a rock.”

The smile Taehyung gives him makes it worth taking a dirty rock back to his dorm
