........................................"Bella!" A voice whispers quietly in my ear. Lexi shakes my sleepy body gently and pulls me out of the car seat. "We're here."
I groan quietly and take in my surroundings. We're parked in the shadows of some trees, hiding in the driveway of a huge house.
The sun has almost completely set on the horizon, smothered by dark storm clouds that threaten to drown the city in rain. The only light we have are the headlights on the front of the car, which have already been dimmed down for cover.
The concrete building has fallen into a pile of rubble, and only the left half of the house is still standing. Vines creep through the cracks and shattered windows, as well as deep, red roses.
A single light glows through the window from a room on the top floor, flickering slightly. The French conference must be up there.
They could have been at least a little bit more subtle.
A second car pulls up behind us, and two figures get out. I instantly recognise the red hair as Aurora's, and Alex wraps his hand around hers as they walk over to us.
She pulls Lexi and I into a comforting hug, and I smile. "I'm so glad you two decided to come with us." She says, smiling back.
I hum in response and watch as Matteo rolls his eyes. He seriously needs to be careful else one of my bullets might accidently find a new home in his heart.
"Alright. What's the plan?" Alex whispers, clicking a silencer onto his gun. I do the same, and Lexi brings out one of her knives.
We huddle together in the shadows beside the cars, a crate of earpieces, gun silencers and bombs on the floor.
"Alex and Aurora go in and clear the bottom floor. I'll take the middle with Lexi, and Matteo and Bella take the top floor." Lucas explains, passing everyone an earpiece.
Alex and Aurora nod, both holding a gun in their hands. They follow each other up the reminance of the concrete stairs and disappear behind the dark archway of the building.
Lexi gives me arm a reassuring squeeze, before following Lucas inside. It's just Matteo and I left outside in the cold air.
"Bella. Stay in the car." Matteo glares at me as he starts walking off towards the stairs. His dark figure becomes a shadow in the dark as his pace quickens.
"What?" I question, and he stops walking. He turns to face me and his hazel eyes pierce into mine. It makes me feel vulnerable, almost embarrassed to be around him.
"I said, stay here." He pronounces his words slowly, as if he was talking to a child who didn't understand English. "I am not responsible for keeping you alive."
My heart starts to pound in my chest. I did not argue with Matteo in the car for five hours to not be able to take part in this mission.
He can't tell me what to do.
I start walking towards him, and my boots feel heavy on my feet. The gravel crunches with each step as I get closer and closer to his shadow.
"I have already told you once before. I do not need you to protect me." I snap, raising my finger to his face.
I don't know where this sudden burst of confidence came from, but I think I've just made him even more mad.
His face contorts into a look of pure annoyance and disgust. I ignore it and walk up the concrete stairs into the archway before he can reply, avoiding slipping on any fallen rubble.
