Ok. I realize all I've done is get crushed by a log, and pass out but I promise I'm way more interesting.
"FERN BELLE BLOSSOM." Mama said my eyes slowly opened at the sound of my mothers voice. I realized where I was back in my room, and not passed out in the middle of the forest. I shifted upwards leaning my back against my bed frame. Mama turned around with a cup filled to the top of her famous mushroom juice. She always claims it 'heals the hurt' but I think she just gets a kick out of making people drink it.
"Drink up now, Fern." She handed me the cup, I practically gagged just by the smell. I put it to my mouth and took slow sips dreading each gulp of the rancid drink.
"Now are you going to tell me why you were found in the forest passed out Fern?" Mama said sitting down on the end of my bed with a serious look on her face that sent a chill up my spine. I knew I was in for trouble, oh nuts.
"Well it was just a normal Thursday. I was collecting some herbs, and flowers throughout the forest till."
– sip –
"I noticed a person wearing all black carrying a quiver, and you know who else wears that?"
–sip–
"The aureate crook!" I declared about to carry on my story till Mama cut me off.
"Get to the point Fern, what happened?" Mama said seriously.
"Well I saw the crook, and chased after them till at the top of the hill they rolled a tree log down and it may have crushed me..." I muttered as she gasped at the last detail looking at me.
"You realize how badly hurt you could have gotten?" She said looking at me, I struggled to maintain eye contact and nervously I nodded to her question.
"Look at me." Mama said, making my eyes pull back to hers. She relaxed her body and softened her gaze.
"Look Fern this has to be a sign that you need to stop with this –what do you call them the artistic crook?"
"Aureate crook actually." I chimed in.
"Anyways that doesn't matter, the point is you've never gotten this hurt with this game you have. I let it slide before since in the past the worst you've gotten hurt was when you fell in the lake 2 years ago."
"-Well, that crook did steal from Dr. Blanches and somebody needed to catch them, even if I did fall into a lake that one time." I commented.
"My point is, even though you're trying to be heroic, our village is fine without your 'help'. Please promise me you'll put an end to this game."
Mama said, making tense eye contact with me. Her emerald eyes filled with worry, a look I've never seen her have. As much as I wanted to catch the aureate crook, I didn't want Mama and others to be worrying about me this much. The worry from my mother filled me with intense guilt, and if I stopped chasing the crook maybe they'd go away?
"Alright Mama, I'll stop trying to catch them." I said looking down at my floral bed sheets, it didn't feel right but it was for the best.
"Thank you Pea," She said with a small smile on her face. She reached out, tucking a loose piece of hair behind my ear. She gave me a small peck on the cheek before standing up.
"Make sure you drink all of your healing juice you'll need it now." She said looking at me before she turned away.
"And go back to sleep it won't work without plenty of rest." Mama added, more like it wouldn't work period. I shimmed down into the covers as she opened my door exiting the room.
I guess this adventure of mine will never be fulfilled.
And for some reason the thought of the aureate crook being gone made me sad. Sad that my purpose was missing, to be completed by another.
