*Kariss*
My fingers tapped nervously on the clipboard. I was glad I could hold it, because otherwise I wouldn't have known what to do with my fingers from all the nervousness.
Marc did the qualifying and that lap was incredibly important. It would probably be the last timed lap he would manage. It was looking good so far, but he really needed to keep the racing line now.
My heart was hammering while my eyes were practically glued to the screen. I watched his every move. Every little twitch. Every movement of his hands.
I noticed nothing but Marc and his bike. As he crossed the finish line, I turned my gaze to the standings.
1.
I held my breath as the other riders crossed the finish line as well. Marc was able to start another lap and set off for another hotlap. The riders after him could not start another lap.
But Bezzecchi and Miller pushed ahead of Marc in the standings.
Now he had to go for it again.
I almost felt sick, while my fingers were by now wrapped so tightly around the clipboard that my knuckles must have been sticking out white. I was tense. Very much so.
I had not imagined that qualifying would take me so much. And later he would still be doing the sprint.
How was I supposed to stand that?
The inside of my cheek was already completely bitten. I was so nervous that I could hardly hold a clear thought. Only his time and his driving line were still important. Only Marc was left. My eyes were glued to him. I no longer perceived anything except Marc. And Leo's hand, which slowly closed around mine. He squeezed it tightly. I returned his pressure immediately, then felt his fingernails slowly digging into my palm.
He was as nervous as I was.
And then Marc shot across the finish line. Immediately we looked to the standings.
First place.
A lot of air rushed into my lungs as I took a deep breath. Leo jerked his hands in the air, my hand he yanked up with him.
"Fuck, yeah." he gasped and took a deep breath, then let go of my hand "Sorry, I didn't mean to maltreat your hand like that." he said and pulled his hand back.
"Never mind.", I laughed and ran my hand through my hair "Man that was damn close."
"But he made it." said Leo, looking at the times again.
"He made it.", I nodded and was about to lean forward a bit when someone wrapped his arms around me from behind.
"Hey baby.", Robert murmured in my ear and pressed a kiss to my cheek.
I spun around and fell into my boyfriend's arms overjoyed. I hadn't really seen him in weeks because work had been so demanding on me. But I was infinitely happy to see him now. I had left him tickets for the races every time, but he had never managed to come.
He lifted me up with a little momentum, I wrapped my legs around his body, my arms around his neck and deepened the kiss.
For a moment, I just let myself fall. For a moment, I enjoyed that he was there. At least until I heard the annoying voice of his best friend.
"Can't we finally watch the race?" she gasped. I dropped my forehead to Robert's shoulder.
"Hey Kyra.", I panted.
I didn't even get a response. God, I couldn't stand her. But the feeling was mutual. Always had been. We hadn't been able to stand each other from the beginning. She had been his best friend forever, and she hated me with a passion that was almost frightening.
