and eventually fell asleep again

*Kariss*

The same phenomenon had happened again as every time Marc was around me. I had let him calm me down. Although the words Rob had thrown at me had been terrible.

More than that.

They would have broken me if Marc hadn't shown up.

It was thanks to him alone that I had been able to drive back to the hotel and simply drift off to sleep after my shower.

He alone had given me the peace I needed.

And I would certainly have slept through until the next morning if there hadn't been such a loud knock on my door in the middle of the night that I was sitting upright in my bed.

Completely exhausted, I pushed myself out of bed and ran my fingers through my eyes.

I couldn't hear my own footsteps because he was knocking so loudly. And I didn't hear the voice inside me warning me not to open the door. It was only when I had already pushed the door handle down that I heard this voice telling me not to open the door.

But by then my foot was already in the door.

I didn't have enough strength to push the door shut again when Rob pushed from the other side.

"Kari, please," and his voice took on a sound I hadn't expected.

I had expected him to shout at me or be angry. But he was crying. He was literally wailing.

"Please let me in," he whispered.

But in contrast to his gentle voice, he pushed against the door with frightening force.

I braced myself against the door with all my weight and it wasn't enough. Despite everything, he managed to open the door and stumble into my room.

As if by reflex, I took a step back. And without being able to do anything about it, my heart began to race in panic. I didn't want him to be here.

"Go," I gasped.

He came towards me with long strides.

"Go," I repeated.

"Kari, I love you. Please, take me back," he whispered, spreading his arms.

"FUCK OFF!" I shouted, a little more clearly now.

I didn't want him to come any closer to me. I didn't want him to touch me or talk to me. I wanted him to leave again.

"No, I can't let you go. And look at me. Your Marc broke my nose. I'm all alone. I need you." He moaned and sank to his knees, "Please."

"Just go." I felt tears welling up in my eyes.

I couldn't do this alone with him now. I couldn't be alone with him, because then all the words he had thrown at me in the paddock would come flooding back.

"Please Kari. Please," he begged.

And I didn't know what else to do. I reached for my cell phone and dialed Marc's number. I knew he was out partying, but he was the only one I could think of right now. He was the one I knew would save me.

He wouldn't just make sure that Rob disappeared. He would also pick me up emotionally. I knew I couldn't ask him to do that. But I knew I needed him now.

"Who are you calling?", Rob growled and his voice immediately changed again "Give me your cell phone!", he snarled "You're mine.".

"Leave me alone!" my voice shook.

"GIVE ME YOUR FUCKING PHONE!" he roared and grabbed it.

I saw him smash it against the wall and took advantage of this brief moment. I jumped past him into the bathroom and locked the door behind me.
