Throughout your life, you have always been "more connected" with the spirit world. Not fully enough to hear or see many but you could feel them. At a young age, you played with a ball in the hall that rolled back. Thought you saw the little girl said to move the elevator of your grandma's workplace. Felt the feeling of being watched from the family photo. Even the unexplainable urge to need the old doll from your great, great grandma to be behind an old bible has always been there. Regardless of what your religion was at the time.
You never really doubted the existence of another world. If everything had gone differently maybe you would have investigated the paranormal more seriously. But, eventually, you left your hometown in Texas after a bad breakup. The change is what you needed and focusing on college helped. Paranormal stuff faded from your radar for a while. Something was always missing though... it wasn't loneliness. When you moved it wasn't alone, your sister, Addison was with you. That is until she met her current boyfriend, Wyatt.
The two spent a ton of time together and have been happily dating for a few years now. However, hearing Addison talk about Wyatt and his friend's ghost hunts stirred that longing back up. A longing that Addison suggested you try and explore. It's fascinating to watch the butterfly effect in action before your very own eyes.
A joke lead you to now standing on an escalator, looking for your sister's boyfriend to drive to a haunted hotel. The smell of the airport fills your heart with a sense of uncertainty. Even if you are an adult and have been for a while the feeling of being a lost kid never went away in moments like this. Your brain begins to overthink, "What if he forgot? Did I tell him the wrong time? What if he hates me? What are the odds my ex is catching a flight?"
"Bitch!" Your sister's voice suddenly shouts from your pocket. You startle and nearly drop your suitcase when your thoughts are interrupted. "It will be funny she said, You'll miss me she said..." you mumble under your breath and quickly unlock your phone to silence it again.
Addy: Wyatt's Number is 555-555-5555, add him. It's not weird and I can't keep being your damn medium so you can talk to him! You'll be in Texas for like... 2 weeks?
About 2 weeks. Also, It is weird, he's your boyfriend and you should be here too!
Addy: Tell my professors that. This is huge for me and my future. You both know that I would kill to see him sooner.
Hey, then we can hunt the ghosts who want you dead!
Addy: Ha.ha. Gotta go, class is starting. Call Wyatt he has been waiting. He knows you have anxiety. Luv you
Oh goodie, what a nice first impression. Love you too.
You step off the escalator and try to calm your breath as you then punch in Wyatt's contact info. The sliding glass doors open as you approach and you get hit with a wave of nostalgia. Although a part of you really wishes you weren't back in Texas for this... it's nice. You sit on a bench and then take a good five minutes to type and retype your first message to Wyatt before settling on something.
Hey Wyatt it's Y/n! Addison's sister, are you at the airport?
Your phone takes less than a few minutes before it's buzzing. Your heart sinks as you flip it over, the buzzing continuing. "Why are you calling?" you yell internally before taking one deep breath and trying to recite your first line to him quickly. You steel yourself, look around at the line of cars, and hit 'accept call' with a soul-sucking beep.
"Y/n! Hey I am in the only silver car. I think I see you, Addison sent a picture and told me you'd be the girl in black, " Wyatt chuckles. He sounds kind enough and honestly his lighthearted tone really helps you feel calmer already.
