EMMA'S POV::
I took his hand and pulled him away from the coffee shop. "Where are we going?" he asked frequently.
"Some place where we won't be heard," I told him quietly. Once we got to the river nearby, I spilled my story. "I have abandonment issues, my dad beats me occaisionally and many people use me. I can count on one hand the people who care about me." I held out my hand and held up two fingers. "One is my moms' sisters daughter, Josie and the other person is me." Charlie reached out and extended another finger of mine.
"The third person is named Charlie." Charlie engulfed me in a hug and I took a deep breath, willing myself not to cry. Crying is one thing I never let myself do. It's a weakness. Charlie and I stood hugging each other by the river for what seemed like five minutes, but it was pleasant. I finally felt like someone cared.
"Last year, a guy named Jack used me just because I was innoecent," I couldn't bring myself to tell Charlie what happened with Jack so I let him guess. Charlie's face was grim. "That's why I'm really careful around people. I'm not normally this talkative but this is the first time I feel safe." Charlie grinned and his eyes told me I wouldn't be forgotten. Charlie wrapped an arm around me as we began to go back to the coffee shop.
"So what do you want to do?" Charlie asked.
"You have a shift to get back to," I reminded him and he laughed.
"I thought you'd forget!" He winked. "There's a movie playing in the park this evening at ten. I'll come get you." We exchanged addresses then Charlie went back to work. I stood on the corner and every once in a while, I would catch Charlie staring at me. I left after a couple of minutes to go home.
