Long ago, there lived a boy named Orpheus who loved a girl named Eurydice.
Orpheus had a voice that could move mountains, and Eurydice was a normal girl curious about the world. The boy loved Eurydice so much so that he was willing to risk everything.
His love was so strong that when she died, he sung his way to the Underworld and convinced Hades himself to let him bring Eurydice home.
Hades was charmed, yes, by Orpheus's gift, but there was a catch.
The two could attempt to return above, but Orpheus had to go first, without looking back to see if Eurydice was following. If he did turn around, Eurydice would be sent back to Hades and Orpheus would not see her again until he joins her in death.
Confidently, Orpheus began the journey. But as the walls crept on and the silence thickened, his doubt grew and grew. Was she actually there?
He almost made it--he could hear the birds and smell the flowers of above. But he had to know, for it was too much.
He turned around and looked at her in her beautiful eyes.
In a split second, Eurydice was taken back to the Underworld, her hand outstretched for him as she flew down farther and farther away.
Orpheus fell to his knees in anguish where she once stood, knowing that no amount of singing would bring her back this time. He wanted nothing more than the release of death so that he could truly join his lover once more.
