Torrents of rain poured down on the mountain of the Storm Spire. The raindrops sounded like pebbles beating against the stones. Dark gray storm clouds swirled in the night sky, flickering with flashes of lightning.
But inside of the Storm Spire, Avizandum and Zubeia both woke up to the sound of the raging storm. They have been waiting for the right day for their son to hatch from his egg, but Avizandum wanted the human mage to be awake and see his son's hatching day.
"Your Majesties." The two royal Storm Dragons turned their heads to see Sierra poking out of the shadows of the healing quarters. "I have a certain human mage who is awake."
The two dragons blinked in surprise as Sierra stepped out of the shadows and watched as the human boy walked out of the tunnel behind her. The human trembled nervously, but Avizandum was surprised by the lack of hatred in the boy's eyes and has a wise, almost mature, look in his green eyes.
"I'm glad to hear that." Avizandum smiled softly at the human boy and the boy slowly calmed down. "Easy young one. No harm shall come your way." The boy smiled and bowed down to the two royal dragons.
"What's your name young one?" asked Zubeia.
"I'm Callum, Your Majesties," the boy said. "Though, I don't know of where exactly. I kinda of betrayed my home, but I knew my mother wanted me to do this."
Avizandum felt heartbroken by this and looked at Callum with sympathy. The young boy looked lost and alone, equal to his wary confusion and curiosity.
"I'm so sorry, Callum," said King Avizandum. "I understand how difficult this must be for you. But I promise we'll do everything we can to help you." King Avizandum smiled softly at Callum. "In the meantime, you could stay in the Storm Spire till further notice."
"Really?" Callum felt surprised by the offer. He just met the king and he wants to help him. "Thank you Your Majesties."
After their conversation, Callum understood that Avizandum didn't mean to take away his mother. He was trying to take out Viren and felt ashamed that he had killed an innocent person who'd hated dark magic as much as they do. But he felt glad that he redeemed his actions by saving the son of the fallen woman.
A crackle of lightning could be heard and the strong rumble of thunder could be heard by them. The two kids both jumped in place when they suddenly heard it and they hid themselves in the shadows. Sierra watched as the other Dragon Guards entered the lair just as well.
"It sounds like it's time," said Avizandum warmly.
Sensing that the time has come, the elves entered the lair. They watched as Avizandum and Zubiea started giving each other a loving stare. Everyone watched as Avizandum and Zubeia look up to the sky from inside of the Storm Spire, seeing the eye of the storm overhead. Avizandum and Zubeia both closed their eyes as they readied themselves for the spell. "Oculi Procellae Percutiunt Et Excludunt Ovum.'' Lightning emitted from their mouths. The Storm Spire shook violently as the egg levitated.
Wind surged upward with torrential force. Blue lightning zoomed into the sky and gray thunderclouds rose into the night air.
Down on the ground, the wind whirled around faster and faster, strong as a hurricane. Everyone crouched down and gripped rocks to resist being blown off the mountain.
A few moments later, the winds died down to create a calm space within the storm. The others were able to stand up.
Above them, cracks of lightning sparked in the clouds, occasionally crossing through the eye of the storm. It wasn't long before stray lightning found contact with the egg. Everyone saw the electricity linger within the egg, and then something began to change.
Everyone watched as the egg started glow brightly. It grew brighter and brighter, attracting more and more lightning bolts. At first the lightning was white, but as the storm interacted with the egg, forks of gold, pink, and teal began to appear. The egg slowly rose off the ground.
To everyone's amazement, the entire storm came alive in a spectacular rainbow of colors. Everyone stared at the wonder in the clouds, new hope growing in their chests, then turned their attention back to the egg.
"Crack." The sound was barely audible above the roar of the storm. A crack appeared on the egg, then another, then many more. Everyone could barely believe it.
The cracks widened, sending beams of light streaming out into the sky. Everyone never felt so amazed before.
Then all at once, the storm went still. The light from the egg shone, and it came to rest on the ground.
A piece of the egg fell away.
Out of its shell popped out the head of a cute baby dragon and let out a yawn. He is light blue with six baby horns poking out of his white-maned head. He tripped over the pieces of its egg and fell to the ground, eyes shut tight.
Zubeia lowered her head, gently licking her son's eyelids, attempting to open his eyes. The baby dragon opened his eyes for the first time from his hatching. His eyes are a beautiful bright blue, much like the morning sky.
"Azymondias." He looked up to see a beautiful dark blue dragon above him. "Shhh. It's okay Mummy's here." Azymondias stared wide-eyed before yiping in joy he ran over to Zubeia, who gave him a loving nuzzle as he licked her snout in joy. Everyone released sighs of joy, each seeing that the Dragon Prince was okay. Azymondias playfully tugged at Avizandum's mane, earning a fatherly chuckle as Zubiea nuzzled Avizandum lovingly.
When the elves were about to leave, Avizandum made them come to a stop. "Children, you two can come out of hiding now." All of the elves were stunned to hear Avizandum's words. That could only mean one thing.
Sierra stepped out of the shadows with Callum behind her. The two kids sat down in front of the dragons and watched as the baby dragon stepped in front of them. Upon seeing Callum, the young dragon tackled the teenager with affection, giving him zappy kisses and rubbing himself against him as he made happy puppy-like sounds, before Callum pried the baby dragon off of him. Yet, the little dragon didn't stop and continued to give Callum brotherly love and affection by rubbing against him.
"That's a hyper baby dragon if I ever seen one," teased Sierra playfully.
Avizandum exhaled a laugh and Zubeia watched on with an amused smile. Looks like their son had somehow knew about Callum saving his father's life and is thanking him nonstop. The elves felt a little startled, curious, confused, amused, or happy at the sight.
Azymondias barked excitedly and his parents smiled at him lovingly. Zubeia gently lowered her snout to speak to Callum and Sierra. "He says he wants to be called Zym."
"I don't see why not." Callum tried to pry Zym off of him again. The two kids sat down in a circle and watched as Zym learn how to walk and play. The newborn dragon bounded around, testing out his brand-new legs, tripping over his own wings, and sniffing the cool rainy air.
"He's so cute," cooed Sierra, her expression filled with awe and delight as she stared at Zym.
Callum watched as some of the Dragon Guards came towards him. He glanced at Sierra nervously, she smiled at him reassuringly and nodded to him gently. Callum walked towards the elves nervously. "It's nice to meet you. Thanks for helping me reject the dark magic."
"You're welcome," one of the Skywing Elves. "I'm Ibis."
"I'm Tiadrin." She gently placed a hand on Callum's shoulder with a motherly smile.
"And I'm Lain." Lain looked at him warmly. "So, I've heard that only a handful of Skywing elves know a spell that allows them ta fly even though they don't have wings. Do ya, by chance, happen ta know that spell?"
Callum nodded. "That I do, Lain." He smiled sadly. "That was one of the spells my mom had taught me."
Hendyr cleared his throat. "Well, speaking of magic, would ya be kind enough ta show us ya're spell that turns ya're arms into wings?"
Callum nodded, stepping back to allow for room to cast the Mage Wings spell. He breathes deeply and held his arms out straight in front of him. "Manus. Pluma. Volantus." The runes on his arms each lighting up as he says each word. Seconds later, brown feathers – the same brown as his hair – begin growing from his arms until they've transformed into a huge pair of bird wings.
"Whoa!" Sierra gazed at his wings with surprise. "I guess I should of seen that one coming." A round of laughter filled in the carven from everyone.
Callum smiled and lifted his wings, flapping once to propel them into the air. After he fly around for a few minutes, he swoop back down to the ground.
Many of the elves clapped and the dragons smiled, impressed by his skill. Lain and Tiadrin clap their hands and he walk towards Callum. "Well done, Callum." Lain clapping his hand on the boy's shoulder. "Ya seem ta know ya're magic by heart and ya repeat the words like ya've had ya're magic since ya were a young child."
Callum's wings transform back into arms and he smiled at the elf. "Thanks Lain."
They soon started introducing the other Dragon Guard members too; Draven and Rani, sibling Sunfire Elves. Thor and Gaia, a pair of Earthblood Elves. Lastly, Hendyr and Reva, a duo of Skywing Elves. They soon warmed up to Callum and learn that he has a pure heart.
After they were done playing with Zym, the baby dragon fell asleep in his family's embrace.
