He thought back to the voice message he got a week ago.

"Hi! This is Officer — — with the Raccoon City Police. I'm supposed to be your new partner, but we're going to have to hold off. I really must warn you to stay away until further notice. It's crazy down here, and the last thing I want is for you to get hurt. Please, wait until I call you or someone else from RPD calls you, letting you know that we're ready for you. This won't affect your payroll, just so you know. I'm sorry if this messed up your housing situation, but really, stay away. Don't worry about calling me back, I'm really busy. Stay safe, Kennedy."

He had called back dozens of times, leaving so many messages.

"Hi, this is Leon Kennedy, calling back to address the voice message I received this morning. I'm really confused, and I just wanted to make sure everything is okay. Please call me back at 567-555-8932. Again, this is Leon Kennedy at 567-555-8932. Thank you."

"Hi ma'am. This is Leon. I called you yesterday to try and understand the voice message you left me. I know you said not to call back, but I'm really worried. Please, call me back."

"Hi. It's Leon... again. I'm really concerned and confused about my current position, as well as the state of the city. If there's some kind of emergency, I can always head straight over. I don't live too far. Please, please, call me back at 567-555-8932."

"Hi —. This is Leon Kennedy. I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to go ahead and drive into town. I'm really concerned with the current situation, so I'm just going to roll in and make sure everything is okay. Thanks so much."

Maybe the number he had been given was your home phone, he thought to himself as the radio played. Yeah, that made sense. No one else had picked up the phone when he had dialed you, so it couldn't have been the office line. He suddenly became embarrassed.

Wait to go, Kennedy. You just called your brand-new first-ever partner a million times in one week. Stalker much?

From the profile he had been given, you were only a year older than him. The last thing he wanted to do was creep you out, and on his first fucking day nonetheless.

But even then, you should be off work by now. Surely you would have seen he had left messages and called him back. Oh, well. No use worrying about it. He'd have to give you his new number once he moved into his new apartment.

He's going to work whether you answer him or not.

The rain was coming down pretty hard. His Jeep rumbled on the paved roads, and he turned into a gas station. Might as well fuel up.

Again, the thought bugged him.

Something suddenly whispered to him, as he exited the jeep.

What if you were hurt?
