Lyra sat elegantly in her carriage as it rolled through the enchanting forest that surrounded the city of Pinewood. The towering pines whispered secrets to one another, their branches swaying in the gentle breeze, as if they were welcoming their distinguished visitor. The carriage meandered along a narrow path, its wheels crunching softly on the fallen pine needles that carpeted the ground.

As they approached the outskirts of Pinewood, the air grew vibrant with anticipation. Lyra caught glimpses of green and brown banners fluttering in the wind. The sounds of bustling activity filled the air, mingling with the melodious trill of birds and the soft babbling of a nearby brook.

The city itself emerged from the dense foliage like a hidden gem, with timbered houses that seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Pinewood was renowned for its harmonious coexistence with nature, and the Forest Spirit Festival was a celebration of this bond. Lyra's heart quickened with excitement as she witnessed the preparations for the grand event.

The main square of Pinewood was abuzz with energy and creativity. Stalls and tents adorned with creeping vines lined the pathways, each showcasing unique crafts and wares. Skilled artisans worked diligently, their hands deftly carving interesting figurines from wood, weaving garlands of wildflowers, and crafting jewelry adorned with shimmering tempium gems.

The joyful chatter of the townspeople filled the atmosphere, accompanied by laughter and occasional bursts of music from wandering minstrels.

Poking her head out of the carriage window, Lyra ordered the driver to halt. As she descended the carriage, her guard quickly rushed to her side.

"Is everything alright princess?" asked the guard, giving her an appraising look.

Oliver was only a few years younger than herself, a strapping lad of but five and twenty. He earned himself a position on the Royal Guard for his prowess on the battlefield. He served with Warren in the west while working to put down the rebellion. If Warren was to be believed, Oliver put down quite a few powerful Etheri. His skill was unmatched, which was why she assumed Warren insisted upon him accompanying her.

Lyra couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for Oliver. Here was a Votheri, gifted with incredible magical talents, relegated to the duty of guarding her. She couldn't help but imagine how his skills could have been better utilized elsewhere, considering the rebellion was not yet fully extinct. However, Warren believed that even in her guard detail, Oliver's exceptional abilities could still be sharpened.

Deep down, she sensed Oliver's restlessness. His spirit yearned for grander battles and more significant challenges. She knew he had the potential for greatness beyond the confines of her protection. Perhaps fate had temporarily bound him to her side, but she couldn't shake the feeling that he was destined for something more extraordinary.

Lyra's voice resonated with a soothing confidence as she addressed Oliver's concerns. "Calm yourself, Oliver. Though the festival has drawn a crowd, the Whispering Cities remain a bastion of safety, second only to Callalaya itself," she reassured, her smile tender and reassuring.

A flicker of uncertainty lingered in Oliver's eyes; his worry etched across his features. He understood the weight of his responsibility, the need to protect Lyra at all costs. Yet, as he gazed into her determined eyes, his resolve wavered.

After a brief moment of contemplation, his furrowed brow softened, and a sigh escaped his lips. "Very well, Princess. We shall stay, but I implore you to remain by my side," he acquiesced, his voice laced with a mixture of caution and devotion.

Lyra's heart danced with excitement, and a joyous squeal escaped her lips. Taking Oliver's hand in hers, she pulled him towards the main square, her infectious enthusiasm fueling their steps. Oliver's voice rang out, commanding the attention of their companions, ordering them to secure suitable lodging for the evening. With that duty delegated, he shifted his focus back to Lyra, his eyes locked on her.
