Over the next few weeks, we research stories of suppressed wolves and how to work around it, only to find very little information.
"Gods, we've been at this for weeks and we've found nothing. This has never happened before." I sigh, frustrated.
"We'll figure it out, okay? I'll help you, just like my parents helped me." Blair says.
I nod, "You never talk about them. What were they like?"
He hesitates, "My mother was amazing. She always cooked for us after my father went hunting, and she had the most beautiful wolf. She was graceful, even when she fought her last fight."
"Last fight?" I tilt my head.
"She was killed in a territory war. After that, my father lost his will to live. Before that, he was kind, loving... he taught me how to hunt, fight, everything. He... he killed himself two years after she was killed." He says with a far away look in his eyes.
"Oh my... I'm so sorry." I rest my hand on his back.
"It's okay. It's been a long time. Losing your mate can be... fatal." He smiles somberly.
"How old were you?" I ask.
"I was thirteen when he died. Taught myself how to survive after that, since I never claimed his pack, they all split up and went rogue." He explains.
"My mother was amazing. She was the only part of home I ever considered home, even though I was so young. I remember her telling me 'You will always have a choice, even if they tell you you do not.' I may have forgotten that for a long time, but I remember now." I smile.
"I'm glad," He laughs, "My mother would have loved you. She would have spoiled you until it was suffocating."
I smile, "She sounds amazing."
"She was." He smiles sadly.
I glance out the window, "Isn't the full moon tomorrow night?"
"Yes, I'll leave before sunset, and everyone in town will be out in the woods, so you shouldn't have to worry like last time." He assures me.
"Okay. I'll actually sleep this time." I laugh.
The next day, Blair cooks food as usual before he heads off to the forest later in the day. He had asked if I wanted to go shopping before it got late but I turned him down. I hadn't been feeling good since I woke up, and it had gotten worse throughout the day. I get comfortable by the fire and pull out another book.
After a while, I get the sudden urge to be sick. Not wanting to make a mess in his hut, I take the risk and rush outside before I lose my food. I crouch in the snow for a while and try to regain my bearings, and I hear howls off in the distance. As I get up, I glance up at the clear night sky and the beautiful full moon.
As soon as I do, something shifts in me. My whole body begins to ache and I groan, collapsing into the snow.
"What in the stars?" I groan out through waves of searing pain.
The realization hits me hard and I look up at the forest, "No."
I get up, panicked, and rush to the treeline.
"Need to find Blair..." My vision begins to blur as I try not to trip.
I run dizzily for a while, stopping occasionally to spin in circles trying to find someone.
"BLAIR!" I scream with all my might.
The howling in the distance stops suddenly, as if the whole forest froze like the snow around me. I fall to the ground with a wheezing breath.
Every time I inhale, my body aches more. I scream again, "BLAIR! HELP ME!"
