Mariam could not believe what laid in front of her.

A foreign language- one with the most abstract curves and sharp turns she could ever imagine.

English.

She sat solemnly in class, trying to focus on what the teacher in front of her was saying.

"Shakespeare has created many insightful novellas, including Bla Bla Bla-"

She would have never moved to Australia if she knew she had to endure this hell.

Trying to preoccupy her mind from the torturous subject, she let her mind wander.

Wonder why that boy looked so familiar.

Wonder why he was glaring daggers at the back of her head.

Wonder why all the girls were oggling over him.

With an internal gag, her eyes peered at the clock awaiting lunchtime to begin. Each hand moved slower and slower, taunting and mocking her desperation. Until the obnoxious sound of the bell shouted in her ears.

Her legs immediately straightened, trying to escape from her seat as fast as possible. The door was right in front of her, begging her to rush through it.

Until a muscular figure came between her and her paradise.

A tall man with piercing blue eyes and a light brown complexion smirked at her, using his lanky arms to block the door.

"I speak for everyone when I say this but.... What is that," he grimaced, "thing on your head?"

Everyone around her burst into a fit of giggles, their eyes reflecting the same resentment the man infront of him did.

"Hey everyone! Why don't we take this off and see what's been hiding underneath? A tumour perhaps?" he announced as people roared their approval.

The girls behind Mariam pinned her to the desk, the boys hands edging towards her scarf.

"Please don't," she pleaded in Arabic.

"See even her language is weird, lets pull out her tongue too!" Everyone laughed.

The mans hands nearly skimmed her face until another pair of fists slammed into his jaw.

"Get away from her," grumbled the same brown-eyed beauty that stood before her.

Mariam's classmate scrambled away, tilting his head upwards to stop the blood from dripping on the floor.

Mariam's saviour gave her a look that she would always resent and trudged off.

A look of pity.

But Mariam did not focus on his gaze or the glares of her classmates, except she focused on one minor aspect.

Her beating heart.
