YOU KNOW HOW I LIKE IT

WAYSTAR ROYCO, 2007. 12:04 PM.
THE INTERVIEW WAS FOR APPEARANCES ONLY. It wasn't even really necessary for that, but sometimes they all liked to pretend that this company wasn't going to be handed down to the next generation on a silver platter.
Ruby was content to play along with the charade, even though she already had a desk in her father's office, and he'd gotten her an engraved nameplate as a gift. Of course, her dad couldn't be the one to sit in on her interview, so it was Logan that volunteered. Ruby was fine with this, too, because Logan was always nice to her.
The interview was more or less just a formal lunch with the coworkers she'd grown up around, and they all congratulated her as soon as she walked in, before they even asked her any questions. It wasn't easy being a woman in this industry, but no one was brave enough to be a dick about it in front of Logan or her father, and Ruby wasn't afraid to show that she was a killer. She'd waited for this her whole life, and nothing would stand in her way.
So, she answered their surface questions and after a short half hour, they deemed her a part of the team and told her she could start tomorrow if she wanted.
And Ruby smiled, loose and relaxed, even as Logan spoke.
"Give us the room, would you?" He waved the group of men off and they followed suit, and Logan sported an easy smile on his face as Ruby grinned at him. "You excited, Ruby?"
She nodded, clasping her hands together. Careful not to be too eager, but wanting to be genuine. "I know it's been a little inevitable, but I'm going to work hard, Logan. I won't ruin our name for anything."
"I know you won't," Logan's tone was fond, something Ruby was used to, but was perhaps odd to other people. There weren't many people that could say Logan Roy treated them with respect or kindness. "But this life doesn't come without sacrifice, even if your dad owns half the company. It's hard work, and dedication. No time for any distractions."
Ruby nodded dutifully, whole-heartedly agreeing until he spoke again.
"Which means you can't see my son anymore."
And then she froze, almost comically still as his words settled over her. She tried to keep her pleasant smile, but it faltered and fell, and she looked at him in utter shock. "W-What?"
Ruby didn't stutter, she hated stuttering, it made her look weak, but she was lost.
She laughed, humorlessly and entirely uncomfortable at the sudden flip. "I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about, Logan."
