MASS MURDER
──────

RUBY SAT QUIETLY AT HER DESK, THE ROOM DARK SPARE FOR THE SMALL LAMP AT THE CORNER OF IT, SHINING DOWN ON THE PORTFOLIO SHE HAD SPREAD OUT. She was occasionally shoveling a handful of pre-made popcorn into her mouth, from a bag she kept hidden in the bottom drawer of her desk for late nights.

She found that when dealing with things that caused her stress, she functioned better in the quiet, when no one else could bother her about anything. Most had left work hours ago and were done for the night, so she didn't even have to worry about being called with some nonsensical issue that could likely be solved without her help in the first place.

Usually, that was the case. But with this particular portfolio, she found herself lingering on the smallest things.

A knock on the glass door made her startle and she looked up, seeing Kendall stepping into her office. Hastily she dropped the popcorn in her hand into the trashcan and the bag alongside it, wiping her hand off on her pant leg as she looked at his troubled face.

"I didn't know you were still here," She commented, raising a brow. "Is something wrong?"

Kendall shakes his head, shrugging somewhat. His eyes fall to the papers on her desk and he points a finger at it. "What's got you here still?"

She quickly closes the file, tossing it off to the side. "Possible investment. I probably won't take him on, it doesn't look like a smart idea, numbers wise. I didn't mean to stay so late." She tilts her head, looking at him closely. "You headed out, then?"

"Yeah, yeah, I, uh– my Dad," He stops, brows furrowing as brief confusion flickers over his face. "Marcia called and asked me if I'd go have dinner with my dad."

Ruby makes a noise in the back of her throat, face twisting into something like confused disbelief. "You're going to go have dinner with your dad and Marcia?"

"No, uh, just my dad. I guess. He's home alone, or whatever, and asked to see me, so,"

"That's..." She trails off, blinking her short stupor away. "Interesting. Uh– have fun, I guess? I guess I'm gonna go home and go to bed. Big day tomorrow, and all that."

Kendall nods and goes to leave, and Ruby grabs her phone off her desk, scrolling through the notifications, spotting a few texts from Stewy. She swipes them out of her line of sight and follows suit with a few more meaningless things she doesn't care to respond to this late at night.

She stops at the sight of an unopened text from an unfamiliar number and taps on the screen to open it.

I contacted your assistant regarding those 'personal matters' we spoke of at RECNY a few weeks ago. I hope you don't mind, but she forwarded me to your personal number at my request. Get back to me whenever you can. W. Reeves.
