Chapter 5. New Visitors
I felt bad for Jaxson. I bet he used to be a happy and cheerful guy before his family died. You can tell that every bit of pain is slowly eating him alive. I didn't realize that I was staring at him for too long as he turned his head to look at me. This time, I didn't look away. Instead I looked at him and made eye contact.
I wanted to use my eyes to see what really happened to his family. My red eyes may have the ability to show a person's worst fear, but that's not all they can do. While spending many years alone, I've been practicing to control this curse until I managed to figure out what else they are capable of. I can look into a person's eyes and read their emotions. If they are feeling loved, sad, happy, angry. I'm also able to see a person's past through their eyes, which I was trying to do to Jaxson.
As I focused on Jaxson's eyes, I can still hear Mr. Harperio talking to the class about The Great Depression. I already learned about this years ago, so I didn't really bother paying any attention to him.
I can feel my eyes going from honey hazel to blood red. As I concentrated on his eyes, I couldn't see anything. Something was blocking my vision as my powers reflected back at me. Maybe Kenneth's compulsion had something to do with it.
Once I realized that I couldn't gain access to his past, I noticed that I've been practically staring at him like a stalker. ''Way to make a good first impression.'' I thought to myself as I looked away from his direction. As I turned back to look at him, I noticed that he was still looking at me. Great. He's probably suspicious now.
He looked away without saying anything. I wanted to introduce myself to him, but yet I'm not sure how I would even begin. What was I suppose to say? ''Hi my name is Katrina and I'm a vampire.'' I thought to myself. That's one way to jeopardize my secret.
I looked up at the blackboard and saw that Mr. Harperio was writing a bunch of dates on the board and explaining what happened during those times. I can see from the corner of my eye that Jaxon took a quick glance at me then looked away. I wanted to look back at him, but instead I looked up at the clock and noticed that class was ending in twenty minutes. I couldn't wait to leave.
I looked at my textbook as Mr. Harperio was reading a couple paragraphs from it. He then decided asking volunteers to read out loud. I looked out the window and focused on how nice the weather was today. As ten minutes quickly passed by, Mr. Harperio closed his textbook and stood in front of the class.
''Alright class that's enough for today. Now for the last ten minutes of class I want you to face the person next you and work on a small assignment.'' he said as he began to hand out a worksheet.
The whole class groaned as everyone began to turn their desk around to face their partner. I looked to see that Jaxson had already turned his desk to face me; but I hesitated. I didn't want him to get suspicious. As I slowly turned my desk to face him, I kept my head down so that I couldn't make eye contact. Mr. Harperio came over to us and handed us our assignment. It was just a questionnaire to see how well we can guess what a person is like without actually talking to them.
I finally lifted my head up to see that Jaxson was already examining me and answering the questions. That just made me more curious about what he was writing about me. I decided to do the same thing and get it over with.
When we finished the questions, everyone traded papers with their partner to see how well they did. I looked down at Jaxson's paper to check his answers. ''First question, look at your partner and guess what their favorite color is.'' I read to myself. I looked to see that Jaxson wrote green as his answer, which was correct. I figured it was a lucky guess. As I read through the paper, I saw that every question was answered correctly. Although there were only six questions on the paper, I was still shocked that a human was able to guess all this information just by looking at me.
The school bell rang and first period was finally over. Jaxson quickly got up from his seat and rushed out the door. Was he trying to hide something? He couldn't be a vampire for I would've sensed it by now. As I walked out of class, I saw that Kenneth was already waiting for me. He's still the same old protective brother. I walked towards him and I can tell from the look on his face that something was bothering him.
''Kenneth? What wrong? Is something bothering you? I asked worriedly. He looked down at his phone then looked at me. ''Victor called. And he wants us to come home immediately.'' he said. '
'Wait, why? What happened?'' I asked curiously. ''He said that there's been an attack this morning. People in town are saying that it was an animal attack. But what kind of animal bites on the neck and drains people of their blood?'' Kenneth explained.
Kenneth and I made are way to the parking lot to find his car and drove home. We practically skipped the rest of the school day. As we drove home, we noticed that there were police cars driving in the direction we were headed.
We arrived home and saw that Victor was waiting for us at the front door. ''Victor what happened? What is going on?'' I asked.
''You two follow me into the forest. There's something you have to see.'' he said. Kenneth and I followed Victor into the forest and saw a group of people and a bunch of police officers surrounding two dead bodies. As we looked down at the dead bodies, we noticed that there were bite marks on their necks.
''Looks like we're not the only vampires roaming around this town.'' Victor said as he walked away from the scene. '' Vic, how many do you think are there?'' Kenneth asked. Victor scratched his head and let out a deep breath. ''I don't know little bro. But whoever they are, they mean trouble. And I have the feeling this isn't the first time they will strike.''
The following night, Kenneth, Victor, and I decided to go in the forest to see if we can find our new visitors. If it's one thing we knew, it's that vampires don't strike just once. They always come back for more.
As we walked deeper into the forest, I began to smell a different scent in the air. I can tell that it was not human nor animal, but I can definitely smell blood. I looked at Kenneth and Victor to see that they can smell it too. We then heard screams of pain and fear coming from the furthest part of the forest.
''Sounds like our new visitors struck again.'' Victor said. We began to run towards the sound of screams and the scent of blood. We were getting closer as the scent of blood was getting stronger. My eyes were changing again as the scent of blood was getting closer and closer. My thirst was going out of control as I outran my brothers and ran towards the scent of blood that filled the air. I can hear Victor close behind me for he was trying to stop me from attacking the wrong person.
''Katrina stop! Control yourself! This isn't why we came here! '' he yelled. I ignored his commands and ran faster. I couldn't stop myself. I had to feed. The scent was killing me. When I thought I finally lost my brothers, I felt two strong arms wrapped around me tightly as I was tackled to the ground. It was Kenneth. I struggled in his arms as I tried to escape, but I knew that I couldn't break free from his grip.
''Katrina! Stop! You know you don't want to do this!'' he shouted as he struggled to hold his grip on me. Victor appeared seconds later and took hold of me as Kenneth cupped his hands on my face and looked into my eyes.
Victor's grip on me was firm and felt like he was ready to break me in half. As Kenneth looked in my eyes, he compelled me to calm down and control myself. I felt myself slowly calming down as Victor released his grip. I sat there and looked up at my brothers. I can tell that Victor was furious with me. Kenneth helped me back on my feet and rubbed my back.
When I tried to look at Victor, I saw that he found where the scent of blood was coming from. Kenneth and I walked to where Kenneth was standing and saw five dead bodies on the ground. Each of them was brutally attacked and completely drained of their blood. One of the bodies looked quite familiar, but I couldn't seem to figure out who it was.
''We lost them.'' Victor said. ''By the time we know it, they're going to kill everyone in town'' I looked down to the ground because I knew that this was my fault. We could've found and killed the intruders if I would've just controlled my thirst. I knew Victor was angry with me.
''Alright! This has gone way too far! Victor shouted. ''I don't know who these intruders are or what they want. But whoever it is, whatever they want, they want it bad. And from the looks of things, they're not going to leave until they get it.''
