Y/N

Optimus walked the three humans through the brief history of Cybertron, explaining who Megatron was, how he came to be, and what his plans for Earth was. All of it was laid out in front of them, the projection of Megatron taking over Cybertron and destroying it completely overwhelming Y/n. She anxiously saw the way Megatron destroyed Cybertron, all while glaring with his red evil optics. It seemed like Megatron was a harbinger of death. The projection died away and Optimus sighed, shaking his helm.

"Sam Witwicky, you hold the key to Earth's survival."

Y/n felt a chill run up her spine. It was overwhelming to think about how the entire fate of the world rested on her cousin's shoulders, all because of some glasses he owned. How glasses could have led to all of this she would not have ever expected.  To know that Megatron wanted to destroy Earth, to kill countless humans including herself made her heart sink with realization that Earth was truly in danger, on the brink of destruction.

"Please tell me you have those glasses," Mikaela spoke softly to Sam with her hand on his arm. Y/n felt all of the autobots looking at the three, but she could feel Optimus looking at her. Most of their attention was on the boy however. Sam nodded in response to Mikaela's question and turned towards the giant robots.

"The glasses are at my house. I'll go retrieve them for you."

That was the cue for the autobots to transform. The sound of metal clicking and whirring was heard, and the three humans were surrounded by 5 cars. Bee opened the door for the three to get in. As Y/n went towards Bee however, he slammed the door shut, as if he was telling her something.

Sam looked at Y/n and gestured to behind her before Bee took off. Sighing, Y/n looked back and saw that Optimus was waiting for her. She internally huffed, feeling anxious about riding with a transformer. Not just any transformer either, but it was their leader, the big boss of the 4. Y/n felt like she had to impress him, or at least win him over in some way. Or perhaps an easier goal : not embarrass herself.

Y/n wrapped her jacket around her figure and hoisted herself up into the truck anyways, despite feeling awkward with him. It was either that, or to walk home and she didn't want to do that. She felt the engine start up, the big truck following the other cars in a line. It was like a parade almost from how everyone was following each other.

30 seconds into the ride, Optimus finally spoke to her.

"Your designation?"

She blinked, taking a moment to assess what he was trying to ask. She had never heard someone say that before. However she was smart enough to recognize that it had to be a name. She remembered that when he said designation it meant name, at least in their language. Their language was a bit odd, and When Optimus spoke it was as if he was proper, and formal.

 "Y/n."

"Y/n," The truck responded, as if he was testing out her name carefully, like this was the first time he was speaking it, which he was. His tone was almost curious, but rather impassive and neutral when he spoke her name. "I see," He finally added. "What is your relation with Sam if I may ask?"

"He's my cousin," Y/n replied, leaning back into the cushioned seats of the truck. She looked at the radio, as if that was where his face was, but she knew it wasn't. She didn't know where his face was in truck form. "I've lived with Sam for as long as I can remember. He's like family."

"But he is not your brother." He was just stating a fact, not at all trying to be rude to the girl. It was like he was attempting at understanding her better. His tone was curious, as if he was trying to clarify something. Y/n didn't mind. In fact she rarely got offended. Instead she nodded in response. "Yes."

"What happened to your parents?" Was his next question. She knew it was coming. Everyone asked what happened to her parents whenever she mentioned it. That didn't mean she didn't have to indulge them. After all, it was just an accident, and it wasn't a traumatic memory or anything. "They died in action," She replied simply. "They were military combatants."

Though she didn't see it, Optimus frowned. He knew what it was like to lose some important people. In fact it was something he was constantly used to, and it hurt. Hearing it from someone else though, well Optimus couldn't help but feel bad. After all who didn't?

"I'm sorry for your loss," was all Optimus replied. His tone was hard to decipher, but there was something in it, something Y/n couldn't put into words. It almost sounded like he was sympathizing, though it was hard considering his voice rarely changed in high frequencies.

"It's okay," she replied with a small smile. "it was a long time ago." She didn't feel sad about it anymore. Sure she still missed them occasionally, but she was so young that she didn't have time to get an attachment to them, if anything. She stayed silent, not sure what she wanted to talk about. She didn't know what they should talk about. This was the first time she was conversing with someone of his size, of his species. They had nothing in common really so what was there to communicate with?

"You said your name was Optimus?" She asked finally, deciding to start some kind of conversation. It was at least to fill the silence. Besides, this was the best time for her to get to know the autobot.

"That is correct," Optimus replied calmly, his baritone voice never wavering. Y/n shifted in her seat and looked at the truck -- at his dashboard. He moved his rearview mirror to look at *her* in the driver's seat of his truck compartment.

"Was that your given name or was it assigned?" She asked curiously. She was trying to understand him better. Rather, she was curious as to how cybertronians as he put it, were born or created.

Optimus felt like the girl was smarter than most believed. She was clearly asking the right questions, as if she was thinking carefully about it. It made Optimus smile, even though she could not see his expression.

"Optimus Prime was the designation I was given when I was entrusted with the Matrix of Leadership. It is the only designation I now go by."

Y/n scratched her head, running her fingers through her hair. a small sigh left her lips as she frowned, thinking carefully. "Is the Matrix an object or something like that?" She asked. It was almost amusing at how she was attempting to understand him better.

"Something like that," Optimus replied firmly as he drove. "Perhaps in time you will know more about me, as I know about you."

Yeah, that sounded good. Y/n smiled at Optimus. She didn't see it, but Optimus's gaze lingered on her for a moment too long, some unexplainable feeling overcoming him. The bot placed it away, since it was not important, as his rearview mirror went back to focusing on the road behind him.
