Emerson was a gifted child. And not one of those kids who just got all A's and knew what fractions were in the forth grade. She was a prodigy. In the fifth grade she was so bored with class work she started acting out and getting in trouble a lot. She could never sit still and wait for the other students to finish their work. The teachers tried giving her more work, but it was all just too easy for her. Therefore, the school decided to forgo her eighth grade year and bump her up a grade. Her brother, Scott, hated it and didn't want his little sister in the same grade as him. But when she told him she'd help him on his work he quieted down. Scott wasn't an extraordinarily smart kid, not dumb either, but by Emerson's standards he was average. He got mostly B's or C's and didn't really try much. Even when he did it didn't improve. Whilst Emerson never studied and would look over Scott's shoulder at his schoolwork and solve most of it easily.
There was also no reason for Scott to be mad about them being in the same grade, since Emerson would be in mostly AP classes. Far away from Scott and Stiles, or as Emerson started calling when she was 8 his 'annoy little friend'. Stiles and Emerson got along, but argued like siblings. They'd be at each others throats more then her and Scott usually are, which is saying a lot. They never actually got mad at each other, most of the time. They usually just fought over things they thought differently about, Stiles thought Emerson was funny when she was mad and Emerson found Stiles to be a great debate partner.
Scott just found both of them unbearable, in a good way. He liked that they were close, he didn't know what he would do if they didn't get along with each other. And although he hated when they argued, he knew they were never actually mad. It still drove everyone around them crazy. Especially Mellisa, Scott and Emerson's mom, and Sheriff Stilinski, Stiles dad.
Emerson didn't really have friends her own age, they lacked the maturity that Emerson craved. She wanted to be on the same level as someone mentally and everyone was always behind. When Emerson was eleven she went through this phase of researching ancient history, and when she tried to talk to her friends about it they were too young to be intrigued by it. That's when Emerson started to be alone a lot. She'd rather talk to herself about the things that interested her than to people that could fully grasp and appreciate it.
Her mother would try and listen as much as possible but with long hours at the hospital she usually just wanted to come home and rest. It was just the three of them and she liked it that way. And they all would soon realize that they had everything they'd need. Because when things get rough you only have a few people you can really rely on the catch you when you inevitably fall. A lot of people say they'll be there but you can only really rely on a few, and yourself.

Emerson's dad was a whole story in itself. He was an alcoholic for most of Emerson's life and started getting abusive when he'd drink too much. It got to a point where Emerson and Scott would hide in different places from their father. One night, the worst it had ever gotten, Melissa had come home from a late shift to find Emerson's teddy bear, that she had to have or she wouldn't sleep, at the top of the stairs. She knew something was wrong because she never went anywhere without it. That's when she heard a crash from down the hall. Emerson had back talked her dad when he got mad about something small, causing him to lash out and when Scott jumped in to protect his little sister their father had smashed a lamp above their heads. When Melissa had heard the loud crash she raced towards them, the kids were already running out of the room with their dad stomping behind them. When he saw Melissa in his way he slammed her into the wall making her hit her head roughly and walked towards the kids. They had no where to hide now, they just stood there by the stairs waiting to be punished for whatever they had done. It was Emerson who was punished that night. Her father told her it was for her attitude and the back talk. He was so mad over the little girl not listening to him, and for the fact that she hadn't yet cried.
He slapped her across the face and when she fell it was too close to the stairs, she went tumbling down them with no way to stop. And even if she could've stopped herself, she was almost unconscious so there was little she could do. When she landed at the bottom her brother was already racing to help her, with her mother following suit. Her father just stood at the top, staring down at her with a glare. To this day she has a scar to remind herself of that's night, and the traumatic events that occurred. Even though she remembers it like it was yesterday, her mother and brother seem to have blocked it out. They never saw their father, he never came to visit and honestly they were all grateful. They didn't need a repeat of the horrors that follow him, even if he did change it didn't make him any less of a shitty father.

Well that's the prologue. Hope you like it and think it's something you'd enjoy reading. I tried to just briefly go over Emerson's life before we get into the shows plot. I'm going to try and post at least twice a week (hopefully more) but for now this is all. Byeee!
