With a sigh, I glance around the empty room. It only takes me a few seconds to sneak my phone out of one of my drawers to start going through it.
Once I have what I want up on the screen, I reach forward to position my phone up against the screen of my computer. What I see on my phone isn't satisfying, so I reach forward to fix it.
"Hell-oo, beautiful girl in the box."
His voice is soft and quiet, sleepiness clear no matter how much he tries to hide it. I smile and roll my eyes at the way he said hello. "Hi." I greet him back. I absently reach forward to grab the styrofoam box I set aside momentarily for this.
"Why do you eat dinner so late?"
I'm busy chewing a piece of orange chicken. "It's not late." I argue. I spare a glance at the clock on my computer in front of me.
"It's, like, nine—almost ten. Your time."
"Exactly." I shrug him off and smile at the camera. I have it propped up against my computer, pointed right at me. Finn gets to watch me eat tonight.
Finn brings the phone closer to his face as he squints. "Are you still at work?" He questions dramatically, as if he couldn't already assume that.
I shrug again.
"Why? I thought you got off already."
I shake my head and look into the little cardboard box, mixing around my chicken and rice. "Too much work to do." I dismiss.
"Evie,"
"Finn," I mock. He scoffs again which makes me smile.
"Are you the only one there?"
"No." I hum, almost bragging. "Adler's still here." I smugly smile.
"He doesn't count, and you know it." Finn dismisses me immediately.
We've been talking on the phone as much as we can for the past few months. Surprisingly, 'as much as we can' isn't actually that much. But we're managing.
He's learned who basically lives here and who doesn't. He knows that Coleman and Adler never leave their offices. He's decided that if I'm here after Jennings leaves, then I'm here for too long.
Jennings left a long time ago.
"Peaches, go home." Finn groans. "It's time."
"No." I scoff, scrunching my nose at him like his suggestion disgusts me. "Do you see all this, Finn?" I quickly set my food to the side so I can pick up just one pile of files off my desk.
"Yes, I see it." Finn sighs. "But it's late, and I can already see your yawning getting closer and closer together."
I make a face. "You're timing my yawns?"
"Maybe."
"That's disgusting."
"Yeah, well," Finn sighs and the camera moves away from him. "I'm a man." He reminds. "Always here to give you the stats you don't want and didn't ask for."
"You're so annoying." I roll my eyes at him with a grumble as I reach forward to grab my tiny cardboard box. "I'll leave after I finish these." I lift up two files for him.
"Oh, no. You won't fool me with that." Finn laughs at my attempt. "You'll leave after you finish the last of the first one." He decides. I frown and look down at the file I was already looking at.
