"Morning Maxine." Y/n says as she rounds the counter of the store. Maxine waves, too busy fixing her eyebrows with her compact mirror in hand. Y/n stopped upon seeing this. "Maxine, where are your glasses?" Y/n asks, setting her bag down underneath the counter on a hook. Maxine looks at her for a second before she scoffs.

"I got rid of them. They were no good with a crack in the lenses, plus I can see perfectly fine now." Maxine said, before setting the mirror down. She fixed her hair before looking straight at Y/n. "How do I look?" She asked, before Y/n stared for a second.

"You look fine." Y/n said with a shrug, unsure of what else to say. Truthfully, Maxine looked like she'd just stepped out of the theater with the heavy blush and thin brows. But, if she thought it was appropriate, so be it.

"That's it? Honestly Y/n you're no help." Maxine said as she rolled her eyes, opening the compact mirror again.

"If you want a bigger mirror you can always go to my room." Y/n said as she picked up the paper on the counter, reading today's news.

"Oh yeah I read that, someone died." Maxine said calmly. Y/n stared at her wide eyed before going through the paper quickly, and then finding what she was talking about. It was a woman, married, in her twenties, murdered. Parts of her body had been lost, and the picture was so graphic is made Y/n's stomach turn. Maxine giggled watching her reaction, before wiping a fake tear from her eye.

"How could you laugh about this? She has children, a family." Y/n said, before Maxine shrugged, lining her lips.

"Y/n, that girl was a tramp. Please, she deserved it. That and more." Maxine said, before Y/n huffed, placing the paper down next to her, moving to massage her temples.

" I honestly don't know what that spirit has done to you, but I hope by the gods you find some sense within yourself." Y/n said, before walking out from behind the counter.

"Y/n you're so whiny. You didn't like how bubbly I was before, and now that I've toned down you wanna rain on my parade. Pick a damn side you crazy bitch." Maxine spat at her, and Y/n stopped. She wasn't sure what to do. Part of her wanted to punch the teeth out of Maxine's mouth, but the other half wanted to just walk away.

'Oh who gives a damn. It's my store anyway.' Y/n thought. She turned on her heel, grabbing a nearby candle off of the shelf, and before she could round the counter Maxine bolted into the back of the store. Into Y/n's room. She was pissed.

"What? You're running from me now?" Y/n asked as Maxine hid under her table, the cloth over it just barely covering Maxine. Y/n sighed, setting the candle on the table, before deciding to do something worse than hitting her. 'Why not just scare the shit out of her?' Y/n thought. She reached over to a box of matches she kept on the table, lighting on and using it to light the candle. Then, she let the candle roll, roll off of the table, and fall on the floor. It only took a few seconds before the cloth caught on fire. Maxine climbed out from under the table, fire on the edge of her dress.

"Oh my god! Get it off! Get it off!" Maxine screamed, trying to put the fire out, waving her hands at it. Y/n stood in amusement, watching Maxine panic. Maxine turned from her place on the floor to see Y/n stifling her laugh.

"Having fun down there?" Y/n asked, before Maxine glared at her, trying to put the fire out, only making it worse.

"No! I am not! Ugh! You're so annoying! Just help me get this out!" Maxine yelled, before Y/n cackled, walking over to her. She grabbed a bottle of water off a nearby shelf, dumping it onto the fire on Maxine's dress. Thankfully, it was just enough to put it out, along with Y/n stepping on it repeatedly.

"There. Next time, don't get me upset." Y/n said, kicking Maxine's leg. She swatted her away, watching Y/n walk away from her. " Oh, Maxine." Y/n said, pushing the curtains open. "Shelves on isle three need to be restocked." Y/n said before walking back to the counter.

The day was unsurprisingly boring, little customers coming by. Some looking around, others offering to help find some safety with the lord, all that stuff. It was around noon when a man came in with a large bouqet of flowers.

"Hey Maxine, what day is it?" Y/n asked, before she looked over to the calendar on the wall.

"Tuesday, October seventh. Would you like the year too? It's 1918." Maxine says sarcastically as the man sets the bouqet on the counter.

'Because it's Tuesday.' Y/n thinks. She smiles to herself as the man hands her a small notecard.

"There's a note for you miss." The man said, before bowing his head slightly. He leaves shortly after. Y/n opens the small card, reading it's contents.

'It's been far too long, why don't you meet me at the records district, 7:30 sharp. A~" The note reads. Y/n smiles, before the note is snatched out of her hand by none other than Maxine. 'Shit.' Y/n thinks.

"It's been far too long, why don't you meet me at the records district, 7:30 sharp, A- wait, A? Who's this from?" Maxine asks, not confused. Y/n pinches the bridge of her nose before snatching the note from her.

"None of your business. I'm going to grab a knife from the back to cut the stems." Y/n says, and Maxine follows her, persistent.

"Who's that note from? You know you can tell me anything Y/n, c'mon" Maxine pleads, pulling in her sleeve. Y/n digs through a drawer, finding a small knife. She turns around, walking around Maxine who is still insistent on knowing.

"Maxine mind yourself please." Y/n says, before she walks through the curtains, removing the flowers from their wrapping.

"Y/n tell me I wanna know. Tell me." Maxine whined, watching as Y/n set the note on the counter. It was then she realized the ink was red. Her eyes went wide. "Oh my god Y/n." Maxine said, before pointing to the letter. " You're totally going out with Alastor." Maxine said, the tone in her voice one Y/n couldn't pick up.

"Maxine why would you say that?" Y/n asked as she cut the ends of the flowers.

"Red ink, A? Sounds like him." Maxine said, before ripping the note. Y/n bit her tongue, trying not to get upset. " But I know you don't like him. So I guess these flowers can get thrown away." Maxine said, about to reach for them. Y/n stopped her.

"Maxine he's decided to court me." Y/n said, still looking at the flowers. Maxine was silent, pulling her hands back.

"Oh... did he, ask you or just.. decide too?" She asked before Y/n sighed.

"He asked." Y/n said, before Maxine smiled, almost relieved.

"Great, and you said no! There's nothing to worry about." She said smiling, about to take the flowers again.

"Maxine, I allowed it." Y/n said, quickly reaching for them, deciding to take them to the back room, which slightly smelt of smoke. Maxine was silent, just looking at where the flowers had once been. Out of all the things she could have been told, she never would've expected this from Y/n.
