i woke up a little earlier than usual the next morning. today was my first day at work. i was excited to see soda which was weird, i barely knew the guy. but boy was he dreamy.

i got up out of bed and took a quick shower before my dad got up. when i got out i heard him moving around downstairs.

"maddie!" i heard him yell and decided to go downstairs instead of faking sleep.
"morning dad" i smiled
"well hey kiddo" he said returning the smile and setting down a plate of toast in front of me
"how was shopping yesterday?" i asked him taking a bite.
"same old same old" he said then looked at me "how was school?" he asked

school. i thought, i didn't even bother showing up yesterday. but i couldn't tell him that instead i smiled
"school was great dad" i lied
"that's good" he smiled "i have a job interview later today" he said
"really where?" i asked happily
"an old drugstore about 2 blocks down" he said as he exited the kitchen, i assumed to go get dressed.

i glanced at the clock it was only 6:30 am. i didn't have to be at the dx until 11:30. but I couldn't stay here, maybe i could be there early? I don't know but i do know I can't let dad know im skipping. i grabbed my backpack and decided to go ahead and walk to the dx, it was about a 30 minute walk.

"bye dad!" i called out before leaving
"have a good day!" he called out as i left

it was a warmish morning around 50 degrees probably, could've been worse i thought. after around 30 minutes i arrived at the dx and to my surprise i saw soda but no steve.

"hey!" i greeted soda as he was unlocking the dx door
"maddie? hey!" he said jumping a little then he looked at me weirdly
"why are you here?" he asked
"work duh!" i smiled
"we told you 11:30" he laughed
"well im early today" i said a little cheerfully, i hoped it wouldn't bother him me being 4 hours early.

"well steve will be here later, so i guess it's just me and you" he said with a smile as we both walked inside the dx.
"fine by me" i said with a smile as well.
"it's not normally busy this early, you can do whatever" he said as he stepped behind the counter
"uh what exactly is there to do?" i asked looking around and stealing a few glances at him.
"hmm" he said as he thought for a minute then he looked at me with a smile. boy that smile i thought.

"how about we get to know each other a little more?" he suggested
"sure, what do you wanna know?" i asked him
soda grinned a little "for starters" he said then took a long pause, almost as if he shouldn't as the question he was about to ask.
"why do you, ya know a soc out of all people need a job?" he asked suddenly.

i felt my heart began to race. i didn't know him very well but still he seemed easy to trust. then all of the stories I'd heard about the greasers played in my head and i sighed. should i just lie? sodas words broke through my thinking.

"im sorry if it's-" he started but i cut him off with a smile
"oh it's nothing!" i said innocently "i was just bored ya know? wanted to try something new" i lied and he nodded believing me. that's one good thing about being a soc, we can lie pretty good.
"that's cool" soda said and looked at me with a look i hadnt seen before, at least from him. it looked almost as if he was admiring me? i quickly shook the feeling.

he's just a greaser boy i thought, nothing too fancy about him. and your just a soc, who needs money but can't tell anyone. i sighed to myself as i let my mind wonder off into thought staring out of the dx window and at the sky.
