Rena POV

Damion was quiet. Unearthly so. We'd been walking for ages and he had not spoken a word. I'm not sure whether it's cause he's trying to be professional or because he simply has nothing to say to me . Not that I have anything to say to him. I've heard from Kristlyn that he and Arlo were close but how when Damion was quite literally a bastard child of the throne. Surely there was some animosity between them.

"Why'd you join the hunters Rena?" He asked curiously, breaking the silence. Perhaps he spent all that time trying to figure out what to say to me.

"For fun." I say jokingly. I wasn't about to tell him anything personal he didn't seem like the most trustworthy person. And majority of my friends were demons. Then again he is a demon.

"You're still new. Jake and Shae have been around for years even before the massacre." He explains himself without me even asking and he's right I am new. I've only been around for five years, Shae and Jake have been part of the Hunter's guild their whole lives. Shae inherited the entire organization after the massacre. And I only joined after the massacre. Even Reece had affiliations with the Hunters longer than me. I didn't mind though I'm here now and one of the higher ranking members so I shrugged in response to Damion's explanation.

"What about you? Why'd you stay in Arlo's castle after the massacre?"  I ask. No time for pleasantries in this forsaken labyrinth.

"Why wouldn't I want to be my brother's right hand?" He questioned in lieu of an answer. Oh he's good. He knows what he's doing. But that's fine cause so do I.

"Did you always think Arlo would end up as king?" I ask just before he abruptly pushed me aside and had his sword drawn.

I drew my own weapon just in case. He looked around then back at me. "Thought I heard something." He explained and before I could repeat myself, "and to answer your question, no, I did not. Everyone knew Kristlyn was next in line. I was no exception besides we only got close after that incident that was him becoming king."

"You know he says he did it cause Kristlyn was in no state to remake the treaty but we all know that it's because he didn't want her on the throne." He continues. I may have accidentally got him to open up. "Don't we Rena?" He asks me and yes I did know. I knew of the rumours that littered the halls of the castle and the barracks at headquarters on the night shifts. Jake had no problem bad mouthing the demon king and his methods when he wasn't around.

"Yes I know." It's the last thing I say before letting the silence set over us again. I anxiously decide to plug my ears before the next corner.

There was a room at that corner. And Damion claimed that it reeked of sirens. I choose to believe him considering I didn't have the right sense of smell to make any assumptions by myself. We both stalked towards the open room quietly. There wasn't much of a door just a hole in the wall leading to a small lake that would connect back to wherever the rogue siren's headquarters where.

It was perfect.
