I had been watching Arden since she got to the bar tonight. She slipped in wearing form fitting light pink dress that was a little overdressed for the dive bar we were in. Her 5'6" frame with every curve accentuated, that deep mocha skin providing the perfect contrast to her dress color, her hair is twisted but placed in a half up half down style.
She looked gorgeous.
Once she greeted Aria and performed her obligatory small talk quota with other guests, she excused herself and retreated to the bar. She was never one for small talk.
I've known Aria since college and had been around When Aria asked me to step in with Arden and get her away from that creep Josh, I was all too happy to put that weasel in his place. But every time Aria asked me to step in, the attitude I got from Arden almost made regret coming to her rescue.
Arden had a way of trying to get into trouble, Aria had a way of trying to protect Arden from herself, and I always ended up being a part of Aria's cockamamie schemes. And tonight, was no exception, which is how I found myself at the valet stand facing off with this beautiful pain in the ass listening to her argue with her sister. I told Aria this would end how it always does Arden being displeased.
During the car ride to her place, I understood exactly what Aria had meant. Arden sat in silence for most of the ride, mumbling to herself about how she could take care of herself and the choice words shed tell her sister in the morning. We let the radio do all the talking until I feel her eyes burning a hole in the side of my head.
"So, Aria told me you're looking for a job," I blandly try to make conversation to combat the awkward silence.
"Yeah, I've been looking but no bites on my resume yet," she sighs. I glance over to see her constantly tugging at her hem.
"Email me a copy I'm sure I could help tweak it so you can get more bites," I offer then add, "if you want."
"Okay," Arden grumbles in reply even though I had a strong suspicion that emailing me her resume was nowhere in her plans.
I make a turn into the parking garage of her apartment building and park. We sit in silence for a beat before either of us spoke.
"How do you know where I live," her face scrunched as the question leaves her beautiful lips.
My only reply is, "Your sister." While Arden was throwing her little fit at the valet stand Aria took the liberty of texting me Arden's address.
"So, my sister asks and you just what, do her favors whenever," she questions.
"That's what friends do" I shrug.
"Friends, yea right" she scoffs.
I sit and watch her fidget in her seat. I couldn't tell whether it was because she didn't want me to know where she lived and that made her uncomfortable or if she was upset by her sister's intrusiveness.
We get out of the car and head toward the elevator. Arden must not have been paying attention because when she stops before pushing the button putting her hand on her hip, jutting it out making me notice how curvaceous her body is. And the tight dress she had on only accentuated my point.
"I can get myself to my own door," she deadpans without turning around.
"Now what kind of gentleman would that make me," I joke pressing the up button on the panel.
"I have a feeling you're anything but a gentleman," she says while stomping into the elevator turning then adding, "I'm not going to have sex with you tonight."
"I didn't think you would. Aria was just tipsy and spouting nonsense," I chuckle stepping inside of the empty elevator car.
The elevator stops indicating that we have arrived on her floor. Before I can step out of the elevator, she steps in my way blocking the exit. She raises her eyebrow challenging me. I simply stand there with my arms crossed staring right back.
"You are not coming to my door with me," she demands poking my chest with her finger.
"I am," I tell her stepping into her personal space and challenge, "We can either walk side by side or I can carry you."
"You wouldn't fucking dare," Arden growls placing her hands on her hips defensively.
"Try me."
She stood her ground, and it was sexy as hell, but I didn't have all night to argue with her. After another moment I scoop her up throwing her luscious body over my shoulder starting down the long hallway to her door.
"Put me down you caveman," She whisper-yells, "My neighbors might see."
"I told your sister I'd get you to your door. I keep my word," My voice is as stern as my grip on her thighs.
When we reach her door, I lower Arden to her feet letting every inch of her body caress mine on the way down. Giving her my best smile, I tell her, "You're welcome."
"Again, ask Aria for your thanks, you fucking ogre," Arden says before taking a minute to breath. She unlocks the door stepping inside slamming the door so loud, I'm sure her neighbors heard. There's still a smile on my face when my driver arrives. I text Ari asking for Arden's resume as soon as possible.
I told myself I'd just look over her resume then let the woman go on about her life, maybe I can put in a good word for her at another firm that owed me a favor. I'll just Aria this one favor so she didn't have to worry about her kid sister while she was gone.
At least that's what I told myself in the Uber ride back to the bar.
