A Drink Before We Go? Luigi X Bowser

Chapter 14

Luigi was the only Ambassador that remained the next day for the council meeting, he felt even more intimated than he usually did by all the other Koopas, he couldn't help but think that they were a little suspicious of him, must just be projecting he convinced himself, to try and calm down.

They argued as they always did, he'd go to speak and they'd all look at him silently and then go back to arguing, "this is a sign of war, we can't go alone with the old plan anymore, we need peace where we can get it?! What makes you think we could invade a country while trying to defend our own?!" Shouted one.

"That's not what I'm saying!" Then another.

"Why is Mushroom Kingdom still on our side even?!", And then, she stopped, she looked up and her eyes narrowed on Luigi, "why IS Mushroom Kingdom still on our side??", She asked, "you're supposed to know, so tell us!".

"I know little more than you and it's that Princess Peach doesn't want to declare a side to fight for, she believes that this can be settled peacefully.", Luigi responded calmly, though inside he was horrified that he'd say something wrong and someone would jump up with "he's a spy!", All throughout his time here his mind kept jumping back to all these Koopas trying to kill him and his brother, he longed for the days before he was political, but then again he was risking his and his brother's life to save some Princess and one might consider that a little political.

He looked to Bowser, who was talking with a Koopa, Luigi got worried then too, he saw what happened to that Cloud Soldier, but at the same time he felt a kind of comfort around Bowser, that's usually when his heart beat really quickly in a different way, a subtle way that made everything different.

He tried to block that out, he had to focus on a way to get close to him, what was wrong with him anyway?! Didn't he realize he was Bowser's enemy?!

That's when he realized just how long he'd been staring at Bowser, because Bowser had been staring back, he was still talking to the other Koopa that he was before, all while just watching Luigi.

Luigi pulled himself together quickly and poorly and tried to pretend to look and listen to other conversations, he still felt Bowser watching him, he felt terribly embarrassed at this.

Watching him, trying to identify him, Bowser had been suspicious of Luigi this whole time, Luigi must have been onto him, or Peach was, or perhaps Luigi has something else he's trying to hide, he couldn't trust Luigi.

The whole plan had nearly been thrown into shambles, Bowser knew the Cloud Queen was clever, Peach was neïve, though Bowser didn't take Peach for stupid, she was holding everything together with her vagueness and through her tiny Pawn, Luigi.

Bowser had lead his entire life to be a great leader as his mother and her father and his father, so it was completely reasonable to be suspicious of Luigi, but between the last few days Bowser had found his infatuation with Luigi to be less of suspicion and more of comfort.

Luigi was just a little guy. He didn't talk much and he was hardly ever conflicted, always polite,

That just makes him the perfect cover, a spy is someone no one would ever suspect! Bowser thought to himself, but this does make him a very poor spy...

Maybe he's trying to get my attention. Luigi wondered as he tried to avoid Bowser's heavy gaze, he's making it difficult to concentrate, not everyone has glowing red eyes so he has to understand that this makes people uncomfortable!

"This war isn't our country's only priority! The famine in the East has left death and despair all throughout that side of the kingdom.", One of the Koopa shouted.

"It's an ill sign.", One added.

"It's a sign to strengthen with our remaining allies, offer a trade deal with the Mushroom Kingdom!", Implored another.

"Yes! That would put strain on their country, we could take advantage of that!", The first Koopa agreed.

"No, supporting our side would send a big message to the other kingdoms and if the mushroom kingdom disagrees then it will do more damage!".

Luigi took a mental note of this.

"King Bowser, what do you think?", The second one asked.

Bowser looked from the three of them then to Luigi, "send out the message requesting aid.", He said, Peach will agree to send help, whether she's truly in our side or not, regardless it will bring the two countries closer.

Luigi nodded, he stood to go write the letter, concluding the meeting.

He wrote in his room the whole conversation, that it would be better for her to agree to send help, but for her to reassure the Cloud Kingdom that this is only for a public image.

As he had finished writing he folded it into an envelope, since the bombing of the air ship yesterday he had been given a sort of messenger pigeon, at least it's secured privately.

He tied it to the bird and sent it out the window, then he sat back down at the desk, how am I going to get information? He wondered, it bothered him, he didn't even know anything and he had no idea of where to start, maybe he should sneak about and look in different rooms in the castle? He had no ideas.

He stood and decided he simply walk around the castle and hope for something suspicious, any information on the war he hadn't been given.

As he walked around he wondered if Peach suspected the same thing that the Cloud Queen did, that Bowser was planning some sort of attack on the Kingdom.

Luigi saw two guards walking by, out of some sort of impulse he stood in a shadow cast on the wall, making his nearly invisible, the guards past and he noticed one of the council members.

He watched them silently, he wasn't sure where they stayed, maybe he could sneak into their room when they weren't in it if he could follow them to find it.

He watched at the council member snuck quietly, this made him suspicious, so he followed quietly aswell.

The council member turned around corners making it difficult to follow, but Luigi kept up, just out of sight, finally they arrived at some deep hidden door, the member slipped in, closing the door behind them.

Luigi waited a moment, then he went to the door and opened it silently, just an inch, and he looked through, there were three council members in the room, the ones he knew to be closest to Bowser, they were discussing something, he couldn't make it out, it was too quiet and dark for him to see much.

"What do you think they're talking about?", Asked a voice behind him, he jumped and turned quickly, he saw Bowser, who looked down at him.

He knew he'd been caught now, he was terrified, "I- um--".

"Is it important enough to follow them down here?", Bowser asked.

Luigi didn't know what to say, before he knew it, the truth found its way out, "I- I don't know, he was acting suspicious.", He stuttered.

"As were you.".

"Were you following me?", Luigi asked.

"I'm a little surprised you didn't notice.".

"I was a little preoccupied with following someone else.".

"I can see that.".

It went quiet, Luigi was still on the brink of shaking, the dim lighting in this hall only added to Bowser's intimadating features.

"I- I'm sorry,", Luigi cleared his throat, "I get horribly bored, going on a walk to entertain myself I saw the council member and decided to follow him. That's all.", Luigi stated, surprised at how clearly he got it out.

"That's a lot to hear in your voice, you're usually really quiet, go back on your walk, if that's what it was.", Bowser replied walking past Luigi and opening the door, then closing it behind him.

Luigi was surprised at this, why was Bowser going in there too? And why would he imply that? I talk a lot! He then on his walk back to his room kept going over the fact that Bowser paid attention to how much Luigi spoke.
