the air thickened with an eerie tension as the man's altered state sent shivers down rina's spine. he seemed high. she felt a lethal presence from him, amplified by the butterfly knife glinting—a weapon deadly in skilled hands.

rina moved with caution, her steps light and delicate as she approached the stairs. every fiber of her being trembled with nervousness, creating a distorted reality akin to a feverish nightmare.

her trembling fingers gripped the doorknob to mark's room, and as she pushed it open, relief washed over her like a cool breeze. mark lay innocently beneath the covers, unaware of the impending danger lurking inside his very home.

the sound of the intruder's footfalls echoed, each step drawn out deliberately, taunting rina's fraying nerves. the man's unhurried ascent up the staircase hinted at a malevolence.

without a moment's hesitation, rina joined mark in the bed, her body desperate for his reassuring presence. she clung to him tightly, her racing pulse threatening to overwhelm her senses.

mark, startled from his slumber, turned to face the distraught girl beside him, her embrace suffocatingly tight. in the dimly lit room, he cupped her tear-streaked face.

"look at me, what happened?"

in a hushed tone, rina stifled mark's words with her trembling fingers, urgently silencing him. "i'm scared, mark. we're being robbed, there's someone inside," she whispered, her embrace tightening as she feared for his safety.

"l-let's stay like this for a while, –don't you leave me."

mark returned her embrace, holding her fiercely, words flowed from his lips that were unaccustomed to comforting. "don't cry, rina. i'm here," he mutters.

together, they hid beneath the protective veil of the blanket, their bodies huddled close. yet, as the relentless footsteps drew nearer, their sanctuary offered only temporary safety.

the mystery stranger tried to unlock the door the two were hiding behind, but much to his dismay, it didn't budge. frustrated, he moved on to the next door, searching for valuable items. he stumbled upon mrs. lee's vanity and opened every compartment in search of jewelry he could sell in exchange of crack.

"do you have your phone with you?" mark's steady breathing stabilized rina as he nestled his head against the nape of her neck, given their close position. "i think i left it on the couch," rina replied in a hushed manner.

"i'll call the police, hold on," mark said, getting up and dialing 911 for emergency assistance in their house. he quickly texted the attending officer their exact address just as he heard the sound of the door being smashed by the robber.

the intruder grunted and laughed maniacally.

he immediately rushed back to rina, fear gripping him as well, praying that the police would arrive soon.

mark covered rina's ears and tried to calm himself. "rina, stay inside my cabinet!" he commanded.

"huh?"

"just go!"

rina complied, forcing herself into mark's drawer. the scent of fabric conditioner inside the cabinet helped calm her down but not for long.

the door was finally destroyed, and the man had made his way into the room.

mark had a guitar in his hand, ready to defend themselves.

observing the intruder's behavior, mark realized that he seemed to be high on drugs. "this is no good," he thought, bracing himself for a potentially dangerous confrontation.

without hesitation, mark swung the guitar at the man's head, causing him to stumble right next to the cabinet where rina was hidden. inside the confined space, rina's heart raced.

she became claustrophobic.

a whimper escaped her lips, catching the man's attention. he opened the cabinet, revealing a shaking rina. in a split second, he sliced through her arm, causing her to cry out in pain.

"don't touch her!" mark scowled, his protective instinct taking over.

drawing upon his fast reflexes, mark snatched the butterfly knife from the man's hold, swiftly turning it against him. "you bastard!" he exclaimed.

sirens were heard throughout the whole neighborhood, the sound of approaching police cars filled the air. help was finally arriving.

uniformed officers rushed into the house, their expressions serious and focused. mark cautiously lowered the knife, his hands shaking.

the officers swiftly assessed the situation, providing medical attention to rina's wounded arm and securing the intruder in handcuffs. "you are under arrest for burglary!"

"thank you for providing those details. it will help us in identifying him. we will make sure to include them in our report. now, if you don't mind, we need to take a formal statement from both of you."

"it's important for us to have an accurate account of what happened", the police officer continued.

"of course, officer choi", mark replied.

"we'll do whatever we can to help", he added.

"that's commendable. your cooperation is greatly appreciated. once we have your statements, we'll process the evidence and build a case against the intruder. we'll also conduct a thorough investigation to see if he's connected to any other incidents in the area" officer choi explained.

mark lets out a hard breath as officer choi wraps up with him and rina and left, exhaling in relief.

"well dang it, way to start the week", he leaves rina in his room.
