mark raced away with reckless abandon, making the highway his playground.

choosing a longer, more secluded route, they drove into an area where the hum of civilization faded into the distance. no other vehicles dotted the landscape, and the absence of flashing police lights only fueled mark's excitement.

"let loose, ri", mark noticed how tightly her hands wrapped around his torso.

was it the nickname, the adrenaline, or the rain?

but rina did as he told; she trusted him.

the wind whipped through her orange hair while the world around them blurred into a high-speed frenzy.

however, mark had to pull over as the rain grew stronger.

rina's knees trembled, and she vomited all over the pavement after getting off his bike.
mark immediately crouched down to help her, "i'm sorry, i went too fast." he knew he was going to get an earful from his mom.

mark held rina by her waist and went to sit on one of the benches by the gas station.

"feeling better?" mark checked rina's temperature and tied her wet hair with the rubber band he always kept on his wrist, causing her to shiver.

"yeah, that was wild", rina wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her cardigan.

mark took off his hoodie, revealing a thin white shirt underneath.

"let me call for backup", mark dialed haechan's number and sent him their location.

"he'll be here soon," mark said while he placed his motorbike in safety, away from the rain.

no one said anything in their five minutes of waiting..

mark could only steal glances at the girl he swore he hated.
something about this night changed him.

"have you guys gone mad?" haechan arrived in the area in no time and immediately draped a blanket over rina's shivering form.

mark and rina hopped on to haechan's back seat.

"could you please turn off the air conditioning, hyuck?"

rina noticed mark's tiny trembling, he was freezing. without a thought, rina huddled closer to mark and share the blanket with him.

mark looked at her confused.

"what? you're cold", the girl says.

rina closed her eyes and rested her head on mark's shoulder.

mark froze, quite literally; and then ironically melts.

he never thought he would feel anything other than pure irritation and anger towards the girl.

weirdly enough, he found himself enjoying the ride for the most part.

"minhyung, what did i tell you about the road and your bike?" mrs. lee confronted her son.

"i told you to bring rina home safely!"

"didn't i do exactly that?" mark replied, trying to reassure his mother, "relax mom, we're safe".

"give me your license. i'm confiscating it for the meantime, and no car too. you need to learn your lesson", mina warned.

"but mom!" mark protested with a pout.

"no buts, minhyung. you're grounded. now go wash up and change into something dry. you're gonna get sick", mrs. lee said as she took the keys from mark's hand and messed with his damp hair.

reluctantly, mark went to his room, only to find haechan already playing on his pc.

"wanna play?" haechan offered, still focused on the screen.

"mmmh, after i shower", mark replied.

"rina must trust you a lot, huh..." haechan mumbled.

mark caught on. "she what?"

"rina never rode motorcycles ever since the accident. i'm surprised she even got on with you."

"what do you mean?" mark sat on his old gaming chair, swiveling to face haechan.

"your father wanted you to stay in canada while you recovered. rina rode the motor with my dad to rush to see you at the airport, but they almost crashed into a truck. fortunately, my dad swerved and hit the traffic cones instead. they were injured and couldn't reach you."

haechan finally faced mark. "rina cried and cried every day, blaming herself that she couldn't even say sorry to you in person and bid you goodbye. i witnessed it all, mark. and then you came back after 2 years, and you avoided her."

"i had no idea", mark admitted, he felt like a douchebag.

haechan took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. "in those two years, did you remember anything regarding you and her past?"

mark furrowed his brow, trying to search his memory. "all i could remember is that she fractured my arm, and i hit my head, and that– i couldn't go to the recital. mom never told me anything that could trigger my memories. the doctor said that it was best if i didn't remember anything at all", mark explained truthfully.

"rina told me the other day that we liked each other in the past. she even showed me a prose she made, but i was just confused."

"well, what do you think of her now?" haechan asked, giving his friend space to process his emotions.

"i honestly don't know", mark replied. "but what i know is that i don't hate her anymore."
