One night, everyone was sitting at the table eating dinner.

"Amelia. Emily. How are you guys liking your schools?" Helen asked.

"I'm liking mine so far." Emily replied.

"Me too." Amelia agreed.

"Emily and I are two of the finalists in the spelling bee." Molly explained.

"That's wonderful!" Jill said.

"Emily and I are both excellent spellers." Amelia explained. "Spelling and grammar were pretty important to our schools back home."

"Well, spelling and grammar is important." Helen said.

Once everyone finished eating, Helen started gathering the dishes.

"Let me help you clean up dinner." Amelia offered.

"It's alright, dear." Helen said. "I can handle it."

"Really, I insist." Amelia said as she followed Mrs. McIntyre into the kitchen. "My mother always taught my sister and myself to clean up after ourselves."

"That's very kind of you dear." Helen said. "So, you're liking your new school?"

"I suppose it's alright." Amelia confessed.

"What's wrong?" Helen asked.

Amelia bit her lip, deciding on whether she should say anything. She didn't want to make a big deal out of it.

"Amelia?" Helen asked.

"My classes aren't really that challenging for me." Amelia finally said.

"How so?" Helen asked.

"English has always been my favorite subject in subject in school." Amelia explained. "Looking at the list of books I'm supposed to read as as sophomore, I read in middle school back home."

"I'm sorry, Amelia." Helen said. "I just thought it would be easier for you to have Jill around to help show you around the school."

"Oh, that certainly has helped me." Amelia said. "I'll talk to the school and see about getting you into more advanced classes." Helen said.

"You don't have to do that." Amelia said. "I'll be alright in the classes I'm already in."

"It's really not a big deal, Amelia." Helen said. "I don't mind doing it."

"Thank you." Amelia said.

"You're certainly welcome." Helen said. "If you don't mind me asking, but have you thought of any plans after high school?"

"I've always admired my father and have thought about becoming a doctor or nurse like him." Amelia replied.

Helen smiled. "I think James has some hope that one of the kids follows in his footsteps and goes into medicine." She said.

Amelia nodded. "I really appreciate you be willing to take my sister and I in and everything you've done to make us feel welcome." She said.

"Of course, Amelia." Helen said. "We love having you and Emily here."

Amelia finished drying the last dish.

"Thank you for your help with the dishes." Helen said. "It's getting late. Why don't you go upstairs and get ready for bed."

Amelia nodded and headed upstairs.

The next day, classes had ended for the day at the high school. Amelia was at her locker with Jill and her friends.

"Hey girls." They heard behind them. They all turned around to see Thomas standing there. "Hi, Miss Amelia Bennett."

"Hello, Mr. Thomas Miller." Amelia greeted back. "Did you need something?"

"I wanted to see, if you haven't already checked out the town, maybe I could show you around." Thomas said.

"I'd like that." Amelia said.

"The rest of you are welcome to join, of course." Thomas added.

"I think we're okay." Jill said before turning towards Amelia. "I'll let my Mom know that you'll be home later."

Amelia nodded.

"Do you know how to get back to the house on your own?" Jill asked.

"I think so." Amelia said.

"I know what neighborhood you live in." Thomas said. "I can show her."

"Thanks Thomas." Jill said.

"Can you make sure Emily gets to the house alright?" Amelia asked.

"Of course." Jill said. "Have fun." She and her friends walked away.

"Ready?" Thomas asked.

"Yes." Amelia said.

"Let's go, then." Thomas said.

Amelia followed Thomas outside. Thomas showed Amelia around the town.

"It's a nice town." Amelia said.

"Do you want to grab a snack?" Thomas asked.

"Sure." Amelia replied.

Thomas lead her to a small diner and they sat at a booth.

A waiter came over to them. "What can I get you two?" He asked.

"Do you still have ice cream?" Thomas asked.

"I believe we do." The waiter said. "But, I need to ask my boss if it's alright before using it."

"Alright." Thomas said. "If you can, can we get two chocolate milkshakes and fries to share?"

"Coming right up." The waiter said before walking away.

"So, how are you liking the school?" Thomas asked.

"It's not bad." Amelia answered. "Mrs. McIntyre is going to get me into more advanced classes."

"Ahh. So, you're really smart." Thomas said.

"It's not that big of a deal." Amelia said, trying not to blush.

"I beg to differ." Thomas said, smiling at her.

Just then, the waiter came back with a plate of fries and two chocolate milkshakes.

"Thank you." Thomas said.

Amelia's eyes lit up when she saw the milkshakes.

"Have you never had a milkshake before?" Thomas asked.

"No, I have." Amelia said. "I just haven't had one in long time. Ice cream has been very scarce back home since the war started."

"Oh right." Thomas said. "I should have realized."

"So, should I assume this is a date?" Amelia asked.

"Do you want it to be date?" Thomas asked.

"You're the one that wanted to show me around." Amelia said.

"Amelia Bennett, do you want me to ask you on a date?" Thomas asked.

"I didn't say that." Amelia said. Again, trying not to blush.

"Would you care to go on a date with me?" Thomas asked. "How about we go to the cinema on Friday and grab something to eat afterwards."

"That sounds great." Amelia said. "I'd like that."

"Alright then." Thomas said. "How was your milkshake?"

"Very good." Amelia replied. "Thank you."

"I better get you back to the McIntyre's house." Thomas said as he paid for their meal.

"Thank you for showing me around." Amelia said.

"You're very welcome." Thomas said.

They head to the neighborhood that the McIntyre's house was in.
