Once they mantled over a trolly table the sound of an engine became louder.Caleb hurried and ducked down beneath the garage door like Joel and Ellie did.
Shots from the approaching truck rained down on the fleeing footsteps. Another shot went off after a pair of footsteps exited the vehicle. He wanted to peek and see what was going on. But he saw Joel stop Ellie from doing so and got the gist.
A males hum sounded as if he was searching for something.
"Dammit" a male said "no food. Old pair of shoes. They ain't got nothin"
"Eh. Let's go" another voice spoke
After the truck took off, Caleb stared through the small windows of the garage door at the two bodies left behind.
He didn't feel anything. It was sad to see another dead body, but, it wasn't something that was hard to look at anymore. Whatever was happening to him deep inside, he was slowly becoming used to scenes like these.
"Caleb" Joel called for him
The pistol Caleb now carried felt heavy sitting tucked in the back of his jeans. It swayed precariously as he walked up the stairs, leaving him worrying if it would fall out or not. But he saw Ellie and Joel tuck their pistols in the same spot, so he'd follow their actions.
"Oh man..." Ellie spoke with discomfort.
"There's nothing we could have done" Joel responded to her
"I know, It's just..."
"Let's just get to that bridge"
"Okay.."
Soon enough, voices of hunters caught their attention once they got to the most available top floor.
Caleb pulled his pistol from the back of his jeans. It came out fairly slow compared to Joel's. Maybe because he was still an amateur in the wielding-a-gun department.
By the sound of it there were two on the floor with them.
Joel took care of each one without wasting a single bullet. The last one he'd pick up a spare brick and slugged it against their head consecutively. A brutal way to go out.
In the room with multiple office desks sitting inside, Joel was reading a note he picked up from the ground.
"You know, hearing them talk" Ellie spoke suddenly "I think they're scared of us"
"Just don't let your guard down" Joel balled the piece of paper up and tossed it.
"Just saying, it's good to have you on our side"
Joel didn't respond; moving forward. Caleb on the other hand started to think. Did he feel glad to have Joel here with him too? Though this journey has been appalling — he did feel more of an easiness knowing Joel wasn't too far from him.
Dropping down the last vehicle onto the street caused Caleb to feel a twinge in his shoulder. He had forgot about the sprain he obtained. Throughout all the shooting and sprinting he had to do - how could you blame him.
He let out a sharp wince as he reached for his shoulder. Ellie and Joel turning their heads at the sound.
"Fuck. I totally forgot about your shoulder" Ellie said "you gonna be okay?"
"Yeah.. Let's keep going"
"Are you sure? Maybe we could si-"
"I'm fine"
