Present day:
There had been whispers of a new healer arriving at Saint Mungos. Y/N had been working there since she got out of hogwarts as a healer themselves, so had intense doubts that there was going to be a new healer, as surely they would have heard first. The smell of coffee was intoxicating as they walked into the break room to grab themselves a tea. Whispers danced around as nurses and healers excitedly shared whispers they had heard from another person who heard from someone else who heard from their cousins dogs mothers aunt...etc. Etc.

Y/N sipped their tea rubbing their eyes. They hadn't intended to work all night, in fact they had the day shift however one of their patients had climbed into the ceiling in an attempt to make some sort of great escape and Y/N had spent all night coaxing them down then guarding them because the night shift workers on last night were more concerned with the state of their brothers wifes sisters cousins dogwalker's marriage than their patients, which infuriated them as their actual shift started in...
"FIVE MINUTES." The matron roared "we have five minutes for everyone to get into proper robes, yes Mr Nott I'm looking at you, and finish their drinks before you are expected to pick up your charts and tend to your patients." Y/N rubbed their forehead woozy from sleep deprivation. "we have a new healer joining us this morning, Mr..."
"Malfoy." A bitterly familiar voice said from the back in a tone that made Y/N's blood run cold. "Mr Malfoy would you come here so people may get aquainted with your face."
'It's not him' Y/N told themselves. 'It can't be."
Oh but it was.

Silvery blonde hair walked by them. They looked at the ground praying they wouldn't be recognised, however as he turned to face the crowd, they felt his grey eyes go straight to their face. Breathe in. Do not look him in the eye. Ignore him. "I'm Draco Malfoy I'm a new healer here at St Mungos." he didn't say anything more. None of the usual pleasantries a new healer would say to make them seen approachable. The Matron waited as if sure he'd say more, however upon realising that was unlikely to happen she sighed and gestured for everyone to get on with their day. Y/N rushed out of the room before he had any chance of reaching them and grabbed their board rushing to check in on their patients. Draco pushed through the crowd trying to get to them, however upon finally breaking through the hoard of healers and nurses he found they had already disappeared like a ghost. He stood there baffled for a few moments before continuing on with his own patient.

An hour into the job, Y/N finally sighed with relief glad to have evaded the wrath of Draco Malfoy thus far. This relief was soon destroyed when booming footsteps halted behind them "Y/N?" The way he said it made their heart jump. It sounded so familiar yet so strange. They stood upright and turned slowly "Healer Malfoy what can I do for you?" They asked with a stiff jaw. He sort of just stared, a stare that contained such force, such longing and such pain that it made them cringe inwardly at him. "You work here?" He blurted out. 'Not for much longer now that you're here.' They thought to themselves. "Yes, I got an internship after hogwarts and I've just not left." They plastered on a difficult and fake smile, that caused Draco in turn to cringe inwardly. "Ah well it's good to see you." He said. "You look well." They breathed in tucking their hair behind their ear and looking down "I know, classic me. Leave hogwarts and get pretty."
"You were always pretty Y/N." He blurted out. (Normal people reference 🫶) The pair fell into silence, Y/N growing colder "is that all Healer Malfoy?" They said raising an eyebrow. The man went to say something else, but upon seeing the look of distaste on their face reconsidered and nodded sheepishly "Yeah yeah, Good bye Healer y/l/n."
