When Madison was done telling Lawrence about Hailey's entire plan for the night he looked terrified. She told him about how Hailey had lured him to her house just to trap him on a date with her and about her plan to make Madison and Kayden leave early. She had to admit that the terror in his eyes was kind of adorable.
"Don't even think about leaving me alone with her! If you're leaving, I'm leaving" Lawrence hissed out angrily.
"What's taking so long? Lancelot come over here and pick out the movie we're watching" Kayden shouted from the living room couch.
"We're watching the Avengers" Lawrence said as he entered the living room along with Madison.
"The new one?" Madison asked delightedly.
"Obviously!"
Hailey was sitting on the couch and Kayden in the armchair so Madison sat down next to Hailey. Lawrence placed himself right next to Madison. Quickly Hailey stood up to pick up the remote and as she sat down again she made sure to take a seat next to Lawrence instead. As the movie began she leaned her head on his shoulder to cuddle him. Instead of holding her he gave Madison a look of discomfort.
"Ignore her" Madison mimed and he nodded back.
They watched the movie as they ate pizza and popcorn. As the movie went on Hailey kept snuggling closer to Lawrence. He tried his best to ignore her by hyper focusing on what was happening on the screen. Madison could tell how uncomfortable he got by Hailey's moves so she placed her hand close to his and made sure to cover it with a blanket. It didn't take long for him to grab onto it.
About halfway through the movie Hailey sat up and pulled out her phone. Seconds later Madison's phone screen lit up. Of course it was a text from none other than Hailey. If she thought this was a slick move she was wrong. Additionally, Hailey was staring at Madison like a lunatic, which made it even more painfully obvious.
Remember the plan?
"Ouch my head hurts! I think I have to go" Madison didn't want to do this but she felt pressured to by Hailey's intimidating gaze.
"I can walk you home! You really shouldn't be walking alone this late, especially not when you're not feeling well" Lawrence was quick to reply.
"Kayden? Can't you walk her home instead? Lawrence did pick the movie after all so it wouldn't be fair if he doesn't get to watch it until the end" Hailey pleaded.
"It's fine, really! I feel like I'm getting a headache too actually. Maybe it's contagious" Lawrence made it very obvious that he too wanted to leave.
"I can watch the rest of the movie with you, Hailes" Kayden said moving over to the couch after Madison and Lawrence had stood up to walk over to the entrance.
Hailey looked incredibly disappointed which did make Madison feel a bit bad about leaving with Lawrence. She had to remind herself that this was Hailey's own fault. It wasn't morally right to trick Lawrence into spending the night with her. Especially not when it was clear as day that he had zero interest in her.
"I can't believe you tried to leave me alone with her! You little traitor!" Lawrence said wrapping his arm around Madison's shoulder as they walked down the stairwell.
"It's not like I had a choice. She texted me!" Madison replied turning her phone on to show him the proof.
"You don't have to show me, I believe you!" he answered. "It's just a bummer we had to leave before the movie was over. I really wanted to see the ending."
"Me too! It was a solid hour left!" she agreed.
"Do you want to watch the rest at my place?" Lawrence asked which made Madison smile.
"Now?"
"Yes, now!"
Spontaneous things like these were Madison's favorite. She probably should have said no but she loved making impulsive decisions, even though previous impulsive decisions she and Lawrence had made together had been questionable. But then they were drunk and now they were completely sober. It's not like they would do anything else than watch a movie.
When they got over to Lawrence's place they went up to his room right away. He lived in a penthouse in one of the tallest buildings in all of New York. Madison noticed the tv mounted on the wall in front of his bed right away. They sat down on his bed as he turned on the movie with the remote. He skipped forwards until they were at the part where they left off.
Even though they both were interested in watching the movie there was something about being alone in a bed together that was distracting. Slowly a tension was building up between the two of them. During a very long dialogue on screen Madison noticed Lawrence's eyes on her. She looked back with a smile and noticed his gaze fluctuating between her lips and eyes.
She cuddled up closer to him until their noses were touching. Their eye contact got more intense. He placed his hand on her chin to carefully tilt her face up a little closer to his. Madison placed one of her hands on the back of his head and the other one on his neck. Their lips were only inches apart.
"We shouldn't" Madison breathed out heavily.
"I know" Lawrence whispered back into her mouth.
The temptation to just kiss him was overwhelming but she couldn't do that do Hailey. Instead Madison let go of his body and rolled out of his arms. She was staring at the tv screen in an attempt of focusing on something else. Out of the corner of her eye she could see how he was still looking at her.
"If this is about Hailey, I-" Lawrence began.
"Can we just watch the rest of the movie?" Madison said, still paying all her attention to the screen. "Like normal friends."
They both knew they weren't like normal friends. Nothing about their friendship was normal. Both of them ached for each other but Madison had to prioritize Hailey's feelings. They had promised each other that no boy ever could come between their friendship.
