August is, obviously, about Augustine's short-lived relationship with James, Betty's lover, during the summer while Betty was away as a counselor at summer camp. For the three months of summer, August longed for only James. So much so, she almost forgot how close she used to be to Betty. what turned into one drunken accidental affair quickly became multiple due to August's longing. She was so hopeful to turn the relationship into something real that she was willing to cancel plans in the hope to hear James' voice.
