"April, I'm telling you, it was rigged."
April and Kirby snicker at my comment. "Y/N, it was only one test, lighten up."
I ignore her and continue to rant. "The gods are working against me! I'm destined to fail at school and end up driving garbage trucks around the same street for all eternity!" She rolls her eyes as we turn down another street. It was a peaceful night, so the three of us decided to take a quick walk around the city.
I considered April my sister and Kirby my father, even though we weren't actually related. All I know is that my real parents died in a car crash when I was a baby and the car was lit on fire, killing both of them and almost killing me. I didn't come out completely unscathed, as my right arm and most of the right side of my torso is scarred with burn marks. After bouncing around in the foster care system for most of my childhood, I eventually wound up in the care of the O'Neils. I never met April's mom, but from what I heard from Kirby, she seemed like an amazing woman.
"Don't be so hard on yourself kid," Kirby says, giving me a light smile. "One test in one history class is not going to send you spiraling,"
I sigh in defeat. We begin to cross the street, but before we can react a large van pulls right in front of us and jerks to a stop. I exchange a confused look with April as a man steps out of the driver's side. Only a second later, four men who all look identical jump out of the back of the van and start to approach us. April latched onto Kirby's arm and I protectively stepped in front of her.
Suddenly, the men lunge and before I know it, Kirby is unconscious and April and I are being restrained by two men each. I struggle against them, trying my best to yank myself out of their iron grip, and cursing whatever god was up there why I decided to skip going to the gym this week. One of the men picks Kirby up by his shirt and throws him harshly into the van. As he reaches for April, he's suddenly knocked to the side by... a giant turtle?
Three more reveal themselves and they start to fight them, and they actually looked like they knew what they were doing. Each of them had different weapons and different colored masks, so it was fairly easy to tell them apart. They seemed pretty evenly matched, but my view of the fight was interrupted as I was thrown over the shoulder of one of the men.
"HEY! LET GO OF ME YOU SON OF A–" my screams of protests were interrupted by Aprils shriek as she flails out of the arms of one of the turtles who had rescued her. She lands on the ground and tries to crawl away as the turtle slowly approaches her.
"Nononono!" He says in a sweet voice. "Don't worry, we're the good guys!"
She screams again, ignoring his reassurance. Before I can see what happens next, the man holding me is knocked to the ground, taking me with him. I yelp at the harsh impact.
"Oops." A voice mumbles from above me. I look up to see the turtle with a blue mask holding out his hand to me. I back away.
His face falls, but a look of determination and... something else relpaces it. "Don't worry, we're not going to hurt you."
For some reason, I wanted to believe him. I don't know if it was the look in his bright blue eyes or the fact that they had just saved us from a kidnapping, but I found myself reaching for his hand. Just as our hands were about to touch, he was shoved out of the way by one of the men and I was scooped up and tossed into the back of the van with April.
They restrained me and put duck tape over my mouth, just like her, and slammed the door to the van. The last thing I saw was those bright blue eyes staring at me with an unreadable expression as the van started to drive away.

April and I bang on the doors to our cell. "Hey! You can't keep us in here like this!"
"We know our rights!" I add with another swift kick to the door.
