Denki watched as the ambulance pulled away, and then began to jog once it was out of sight. It only took a few minutes to reach where Shouto and Iida still waited with the villain, speaking to the police. It felt like a blur. Like he couldn't really process anything. It was different than the usual times when he used too much electricity. He was malfunctioning for a completely different reason.
Bakugou. Katsuki Bakugou had been crying, and not just a little bit. And while Kaminari in no way judged him for it, he had very good reason after all, Bakugou and crying were not things his brain could process as a combination.
"Kaminari-kun?" Iida's voice snapped Denki out of his trance.
"Yes? What, sorry you were saying something?" The concerned faces of Iida and Shouto looked back at him.
"How's Midoriya?" Shouto's voice was urgent, but almost tentative, like he was afraid of the answer but needed to know.
"He... he's alive." Denki said, mind flashing back to everything that had happened.
"But??" Iida pressed, brow furrowed.
"He-" Denki swallowed hard as the memory of what had happened minutes before hit him, somehow more real now than they had been in the moment. "He was dead. Bakugou was doing CPR still when I got back even after we got her, and it- it wasn't working..."
Denki met the wide eyed stares of his friends. He took a fortifying breath before continuing. Somehow saying it aloud was making it hit him all the harder. Midoriya had been dead.
"But he is alive now, right?" Iida demanded.
"Yes. But I had to.... shit... I had to bring him back. I wasn't prepared for having to do that to a friend." Denki's voice shook.
"Bring him back?" Todoroki asked, and instead of responding, Kaminari just nodded and let a few sparks dance across his fingertips. The other two immediately got the point. Iida stepped closer to grasp Denki's shoulder to reassure him.
"The ambulance is taking him and Bakugou. I told them we'd catch up." Denki said, feeling like he could speak easier now that the worst had been said.
"How is Bakugou?" Todoroki asked nervously.
"He's... bad." Denki shook his head.
"We had better go quickly before the hospital is blown up." Iida said, suddenly becoming more businesslike at the idea of preventing Bakugou from rampaging.
"No. He's... worse than that. He... when they were putting Midoriya in the ambulance, he was silent. Numb, or shocked maybe. But he's.... He isn't acting like himself at all."
"But Midoriya's okay, right? Wasn't that reassuring for him?" Todoroki spoke.
"He hasn't woken up. He was breathing and his heartbeat was steady when they were attaching the monitors, but Bakugou couldn't take his eyes off him. And you didn't see him when he was on the ground next to Midoriya. He was crying. Like full out sobbing when I got back to them. I think the only reason he could even remotely keep himself together was because he had to be Midoriya's heart and breath." Denki couldn't meet his friends' eyes as he told them.
"Damn..." Todoroki breathed, running a hand through his hair as he thought about the whole scenario.
"We must get to the hospital at once. For both of their sakes!" Iida said, "The police will have it from here. Let's go."
