I run into the maze following Alby's footsteps, turn after turn running deeper into the cold dark maze.
"Alby?!" I shout. "Where are we going?"
"Well you wanted to see the maze right?" He replied slowing down to a jog, "Well this is the maze. The runners have to run through this maze mapping it down in their mind just like we are doing now."
"So this is all they do? Run the maze looking for a way out?" I ask, "It couldn't be that big could it? Why haven't they found a way out yet?"
"It's a lot harder than it seems. The maze changes every night." Alby replied.
"Well if it changes every night doesn't that mean it is impossible to find a way out?" I ask.
"Nah, you see although the maze changes it changes in a certain order, a certain pattern so eventually we will be able to see the whole maze in one."
A sudden burst of frustration floods through my body. They have had three years in this maze, three whole years just to make a shucking maze. Like seriously how big could this maze be. How can these kids take so long. I feel annoyance flood through my body I knew i could get this down faster and more efficiently than these kids, I bet I could solve this maze in a week and so in the heat of the moment the words slipped out of my mouth.
"Alby, I want to be a runner."
"A runner?" Alby asked. "Are you serious? no one ever wants to be a runner."
"Well maybe that's why you are still stuck in this crankhole." I was really getting a hang of this Glader slang thing.
Alby suddenly stops and slams me against the hard wall of the maze. The shock pushes me to the ground.
"Who do you think you are?" Alby shouts at me, "Your not the big shot you think you are. You came up in the same box as everyone else. You aren't different then anyone, don't you think we all want out, don't you think we've tried everything. Just because you don't like it here doesn't mean you can call it names. Here we work as a unit helping each other. We don't have any other option and please if you can think of anything tell me."
Not knowing what to say and honestly being a little bit scared I said nothing. I never thought Alby was like this, I thought he was a nice caring man, seems I was wrong.
"Thats what I thought." Alby said, "If you go insulting my Glade again I will have you out here living with the grievers."
I just stare at the ground afraid to look up. I hoped that he would go away, I hoped I would go away. If one of the nicest guys here could act like that I would hate to see what one of the meaner guys would do.
"Maybe I should stay out here with the grievers." I say, "They would probably treat me better than you have."
Just as I finished saying that a huge spider like creature climbs down from the wall standing directly above Alby.
"Fine Thomas, stay out here die for all I care I'm going back to the Glade." Alby said. He then noticed the frightened look on my face. "Thomas.."
"Look above you." I whisper loudly.
Alby slowly tilts his heads upwards but by the time his eyes reached the spider like creature it drops onto him crushing him. I start to run, run as fast as I can, back to the Glade. I turn behind me to see where the monster is and i see that it is hot on my tail.
The monster, or should I say griever lets out a howl and continues chasing me. I'm scared out of my wits running as fast as I can trying to remember what turns I had made to get here. The griever speeds up so I try to to, but it is hard to speed up when your going at your fastest speed. I take a right turn at the next corner and keep running straight ahead. I think that I am getting closer to the Glade. Four more turns, three more turns two more turns and then I trip over a rock falling face first onto the ground. I try to recover but the griever has caught up to me scrapping me against a wall.
The worst part about this is not that a huge spider monster is about to kill me but that I can see Alby's gut splattered over the grievers legs and I know that I am gong to be next.
The grievers spikes jab into me causing me unbelievable excruciating pain causing me to scream out. I feel my blood trickling down my body. The pain I was experiencing was deafening. Just as I was about to give up hope and let death take me for his own. I saw another person with blond hair run past it beckoning the griever to follow him.
The griever released its spikes and let me droop to the ground, thinking I was dead it ran after the boy. My sight faded. The last thing I saw before it went completely black was the boy fighting the griever.
