Short summary : The Narrator got bored while Stanley was "taking a nap" and they talk about random things when he gets out. The start of Stanley's sign language journey.

(This is honestly a shitpost that literally wrote itself. It was fun as hell to write though and very comedic if I do say so myself. I can't ensure it'll be your thing but,
Enjoy reading it anyways.)

"Uh- Stanley? Are you still in there? Look, I don't mean to intrude but you've been in there longer than you usually do now- in fact, even longer than the longest time you've spent in there! - and I'm wondering if you're okay..?"

It had been another one of those days when Stanley had stayed in his office with the door closed, pretending to be asleep. They had both agreed the The Narrator was not to look inside the room since that would be an invasion on Stanley's privacy, whatever that meant. The Narrator never quite understood why Stanley didn't want anyone looking at him sleeping but to other people, that may have been slightly weird.
Nevertheless, this rule was followed and the Narrator could only wait outside and knock on the office door to catch Stanley's attention.

Stanley, however was busily typing away on the keyboard at his desk, chatting to an entity somehow inside the electrical systems of the parable : the Timekeeper.
Of course, the Narrator had yet to know of this communication between Stanley and the Timekeeper, yet no one would doubt his fury if he ever found out. The Timekeeper seemed to have something against the Narrator so it wouldn't be a surprise that the Narrator had something against the Timekeeper as well.

This entity in the electrical system did have a good relationship with Stanley and they would talk from time to time on the computer in his office. This was the only true way of communication for him as he would easily type words onto a screen and talk as he would if he had a voice.
He found himself spending more and more time inside his office while he would be "sleeping" , knowing he was testing the Narrator's patience.

"Stanley, I'm really sorry to wake you but I would prefer an answer. How would I know you hadn't disappeared off somewhere, Hmm? Come on Stanley, just opening the door would be fine, slipping a note under it, even- ah, there you are."

Stanley, having just closed off the conversation with the Timekeeper, came to the door, eyes adjusting to the light and hair in a slight mess from the actual sleeping session he'd had.

"Wow, you sure look like you had a nice nap." The sarcasm was so obvious that it literally dripped from the Narrator's voice, "Well? Are you finished? Or do you need more time in your little... bird's nest ?"

Stanley's eyebrows lowered in half- hearted annoyance before jokingly sinking back into his office.
"Really? Well, whatever.
I'll just.. wait.. and work on the map, I suppose."
He really couldn't help but laugh at the Narrator sometimes. It was obvious he wanted Stanley around for company, yet never admitted it, so whenever he was caught off- guard, he would attempt to cover up in the worst way possible.

"Ah, Nevermind. Stanley, you're back!"

Stanley nodded, finally committing to leaving his room after fixing his shirt and hair.
The first thing he was greeted with besides the light was the change of balloons in the office. While they had used to say "Happy 12th Birthday, Step- Niece", they now said "Congratulations! It's a BOY!", with the word 'boy' in bold as if it was the only thing that anyone needed to see.
This was a design Stanley had never been faced with before.

He looked up to grasp the Narrator's attention and then moved his hand in a 'holding pen, writing' action.

"What's that? Oh, the notepad? Yes- uhm, hold on."

Stanley's vision cut to black and the ground disappeared from under his feet for a split second. He woke back in his office. The Narrator had restarted the game to place the notepad down just in front of Stanley's door, along with a retractable ballpoint pen to write with.
This was their go to way of communication.

[whats with the balloons?]
"Well, I figured it was getting a little boring in here even with the balloons. They were just a bit... old. I do like the new designs, though, don't you?"

The Narrator watched as Stanley scribbled more words onto the paper. He flipped it over.
[theyre okay - why a gender reveal party ??]
The book was flipped back for Stanley to add another few question marks- to show his level of confusion.
"What else am I meant to put, Hm? I wouldn't have this place run over with plain, single coloured balloons! Imagine how boring that would be."

Stanley couldn't argue.

"On the topic, Stanley, don't you think that writing in that notepad is getting a bit old? Perhaps we should find a second, more efficient way for you to communicate. I feel like I'm wasting my life away, just watching you slowly indent letters into paper."

Stanley made an annoyed face and looked up at the ceiling.
[you were the one that didn't want me to communicate at all]
"Yes, I'm aware of that.. But- that was eons ago, we've reached a stage now where we're far beyond that."

There was no doubt shame in the Narrator's voice and Stanley was going to use it against him.

[can you give me a voice]
"A voice? Stanley, you know I can't- "
[please]
"No, Stanley. I- "
[please.]
"LOOK, Stanley. You were not built with the ability to talk. I get how much you want to but I don't even want to start comprehending coding you a voice," the Narrator quietened to a mutter, "let alone hearing you talk in it 24/7."

[what]

"That would be too much effort, Stanley. How could we possibly handle two people able to talk? I think that's one too many."

This was a solid no. It might have been for the better anyways. Stanley could imagine scaring himself with his own voice, never having had one before. Having noises spewing out his mouth was definitely not too comforting of a thought.

"Come to think of it...Stanley, have you ever heard of sign language?"

( What a cliffhanger! This is gonna be followed up by another chapter where Stanley actually starts learning and using sign language.
Isn't that exciting??
Even I'm shaking in my seat just thinking about it/(slight) joke. )
